IDK if its been discussed before. I did a search but nothing came up, but whats everyones thought on the first oil change after the "Break in period"? Has mostly everyone followed the Audi reccomended 5000 miles initial oil change or changed it prior, if so around what milage did you change it at? Either way what was your reasons. TIA!

I just changed mine at 1800 miles. Normally I just go with the factory recommendation but someone posted a while ago (probably on this board but perhaps QW) with their analysis of break-in oil (changed at 1k miles) and the 5k oil and the first batch definitely had more stuff in it. I figured with this hi-po engine I'd go ahead and change it to be on the safe side.

I changed mine at 1400 miles not so much to get the wear metals out of the engine for fear of damage but just to start the clean out process so that I could get to a normal baseline faster. Just did my 10k mile oil change and the UOA report came back looking really good.

What oil was the 10k run on? Can you post the uoa here?

I used Castrol 0w30 Euro at 1400 and 10k miles and the dealer did the 5k with whatever Castrol they stock, probably 5w30.

Thanks John that's excellent information. I never knew a service like that existed. I already ordered my kits to analyze the oil!!

Looks like the frequent oil changes haven't help reduce the break-in metals. If you used Syntec 0W-30 on the last uoa, then Blackstone's comments that the viscosity is elevated are off since the oil starts at 12.21 and your used viscosity is 11.42 cSt's.

I would get a TBN next time to make sure that the oil still has cleaning ability for those intervals.

the oil from the last analysis was whatever the dealer used so I'm not sure on the viscosity. The sample that was read at 5k miles would have been the Castrol 0w30.

Ok, got it. Could have been Syntec 5W-40 since it's a light 40 weight and some shearing is normal. It's probably not Castrol 5W-30 since it's not a VW 502 oil (unless you live in Europe).

I should probably get a TBN done as well just to see but at 5k intervals when Audi specs 10k I figure it's fine. I was happy to see that the amount of metal is decreasing since the first change (note at 543 miles I just pulled a sample, did not change) at 1400 miles. I suspect it'll take some time for the iron content to come down but the other metals are falling in line nicely. The large increase in Boron is interesting too, I should ask about that. I suspect that is just a different additive package in the dealer's Syntec vs the Euro formula I used.
