Thread: Air Bar Fault Warning

  1. 10-02-2012 12:40 PM #1
    Hello all,

I have the air bag warning light on in the 2006 B6. I've searched through the forum and found some useful information but I was wondering if there are any new updates to the problem. Most of the posts were from 2010 and earlier. Has there been any developments?

I called and spoke to service department at dealer and she said it was not covered under warranty at all even though IMO this kind of fault should not occur. Not sure what to do here.

Furthermore I live in a state the requires a safety and emissions test before I can renew my plates. I would assume this problem would cause the car to fail the safety test but does anyone know that for sure?

    Thanks for your help.

Did you disconnect the airbag light on the dash without the battery disconnected?? If you find someone with vag com, it can be cleared. Dealership will charge you to clear light.

What is the code you are getting? And there was recall a yr or two ago so if that wasn't applied to your car then it could possibly be covered

Also what state are you in? I know in NY an air bag light will not make u fail inspection

I haven't disconnected anything anywhere, light on the dash came on and every time I start the car I get a "airbag fault" message. So would I assume then that there's really nothing wrong with the air bag and that just something has tripped the message?

I haven't gone as far as pulling the code. Would I get the code the same way as I would be getting an engine code? I.E. Autozone?

Not sure about the recall, that's what I was asking. The dealer when I was talking to them didn't mention anything about it.

Live in MO, not sure if the same rules for inspection are the same or not but I would bet they are close.

I think the recall Bill is talking about is related to a wiring harness issue. I had an airbag fault and the dealer performed the recall work at no cost. I was under warranty BTW and even before it was found to be the result of the recalled harness the dealer implied I'd be covered under warranty. If you're CPO, anything like that should be covered under warranty...recall or not.

Oddly enough I have the airbag fault again this week. I'm out of warranty so I'm gonna let it ride until I get annoyed enough to check it out.

buy the u281 vag scanner from ebay.
It will read your airbag codes and reset them for you.
    it's a cheap device that works ($22)

Thanks for the info guys. This doesn't sound like a major problem so I think my best option is to take it to inspection and see how it goes. If it fails then I'll deal with that later.

I did however do some research and there does not appear to be any recalls for this issue with this make and model. I also searched for Jetta for same time frame and still no recalls. So I'd be willing to bet those of you who had free-bies still had factory warranty or just a nice dealer to work with.

    Thanks again!

there is a recall for a specific problem, if you dont know what the code is that is causing the warning light for your car there is a possibility the recall could cover you. if not you still need to find out what the code is to even fix the problem

there are air bags all over the car is and the light can sometimes come on just because the resistance between a connector is too high/low.

I recommend buying a vagcom (if you have the dealer scan it you will be half way to the price of a vagcom if not closer) scan the car and get us the code the system pulled then we can tell you what can or cant be done.

no air bag codes need to be pulled with a vagcom wire or by a dealer
