So I put together a quick (well not so quick as it is 15 minutes long!) video with some thoughts and first impressions of the car from the show floor. I'll be in Europe next week to drive the Golf 7 (just 2.0TDI and 1.4l TSI for now) so I'll probably have another video for you next week with drive impressions.

This is the first time I've done a narrative style video and hopefully you guys find it worthwhile. Sorry for a couple audio glitches and the single channel audio. Was fine in Final Cut but something happened on the way to You Tube.

Nice review, Jamie! Definitely helpful to see it "live" vs. the pictures floating around from various sources. Looks like they've put a lot of attention into detail work which is nice to see.

What was the general impression at the media event?

      Jamie,

Can you talk to us a bit more in regards to the GTI rear spoiler, how come it has that black thing holding it..?

Very nice review. Did you pick the car designer's brains a bit?

Jamie, sorry if this was answered somewhere else but does the panaramic sunroof slide open or does it just tilt? Thanks for the great video review!

^^This...I would really like to know about the sunroof also.

Jamie...can you tell us if the steering wheel is the same size/diameter as the MKVI?

That is the most important thing for me when it comes to the MKVII's new wheel. If I can't keep the MKVI's steering wheel...which I think is damn near perfect...I hope they at least kept it the same diameter. I can't stand bigger steering wheels.

It looks like from the video and pictures that it is real close in size to the MKVI's but, if it is any bigger that will suck.

Great, extremely comprehensive review that goes into a depth of detail that I'm sure will address most of the questions we may have had. Seeing it via the video does, admittedly, make me excited for the arrival of the car. Q1 2014 seems a long way off, though. Doesn't that make it a full year we're going to go without any Golf models of any sort? I remain hopeful that they won't do any decontenting of our market specific Golf/GTI with the competition being so heated lately.
There’s more to it than that, though. I feel the fast Golf is a part of me. We’ve grown up together. When it came along, all simple and full of fun, I was living in a flat in London. Now it’s soft and luxurious and I’m slouched in a house in the Cotswolds. It’s like 1970s rock music. New stuff comes along which I’m sure is cleaner and better produced but it doesn’t have the heart and soul of the original.

I agree with the above - wasn't the US getting both Golf and GTI at the same time?

Jamie - Thank you for that fantastic video overview. Do you have any further information on Euro and US release dates/approximations?

Jamie, can you comment any more on the steering wheel? Is it significantly thicker than the stock Golf VII's wheel? The design seems to be similar to the stock Golf's, other than the material and the stitching. How is the feel of the wheel? Is it as firm as the VI's? Is the wheel itself any larger diameter?

      Thanks.

I want to strangle the engineer that decided to use that much Piano Gloss around the vents and radios

Take one wipe with a cloth to get the dust off and you will have nasty scratches and swirls. Yuck.

I really like everything besides that stupid design decision.
