Thanks man, I found the link. It was from 2004 though, I hope they're still around. It would really suck to have done all that work on that car and it be junk because I couldn't find the front glass.

    Thanks again,
    Gene

    Yes Hal,

by definition the rear window is indeed a Back Windshield.

  8. 10-04-2012 09:22 AM #8

Could you guys tell me what combo of years, or cars, of glass I'm looking for?
Do Rabbit or cabi glass fit??

    Thanks,
    Gene

All MK1 Sciroccos (build dates 1973-1981) have the same front windshield dimensions. Scirocco MK1 windshields are not compatible with any other car's windshield in the world. If new ones are no longer available from Pilkington you need to find some that are in storage. Unfortunately I need the ones I have because my race cars tend to chip them up more than show cars do. Keep looking and call some places, ask people....

A Scirocco windshield from 74-81 is your part....only.

They are still available. last time I inquired they were hovering around $500 for the Pilkingtons.

    Having replaced over a dozen WINDSHIELDS, Hatch glass and every window you can name (whatever specious name OTHERS call it)...my advice is;

Find a good used one.....much more available and cheaper.

I can write you a foolproof procedure for replacing the glass. I have never broken one on install or removal.

    The S-2's are more difficult.

I'll drive my S-1 home in reverse, so I can use the back windshield! LOL

It might also be helpful to post where you are, so that if you are near someone hoarding them, they might speak up.

Doug T pulls one of the new MK1 windshields out and places in front of him as a hostage "shield" and says, "You gonna have to kill one of the shields first."

Back on topic, Shipping the windshields is a real pain so expect to pay like $100 for shipping.

Had good luck this year at the junkyards. a 77 and a 78 came in on the same week and both windshields were crack/chip free. One even had some tint to it.

I have found some around the states, but they will not ship them. The owners say they would have to make a wooden box. I just had a windshield shipped all the way across the states in a cardboard box, with the expanding foam in a bag, wrapped around the glass. It arived no problem. I have been in the autobody buisness all my life, glass companies ship glass in boxes made with little cradels all the time. So I don't know, it is what it is.

I am almost ready to call a glass company in the same town, pay them to goto the place, buy it and ship it top me, we'll see.

The good news is, before this thread I thought I was building a totaled car. Now I am thinking some how some way it will get done, so thanks guys.
