Volvo??...

OK so I've been trying to find out how the stock intake system on the 16v is set up because my car came with just a cone filter attached to the lower airbox. I'm also pretty sure that my car does not have the right airbox, because all the examples I have seen on the internet are plastic boxes and mine is metal. It also is not mounted to anything in the car and is just held in place by the intake boot and supported by a block of wood.
I need this car to pass inspection and right now I have no way to route the crankcase breather back into the intake. I'm just curious what this airbox belongs to and what is supposed to belong on this car to make everything work!

Looks like one from a Volvo.

There was a thread on this just recently where the guy was describing it w/ a certain acronym, shorthand. Once he broke out exactly what we was talking it about it came to light as one of those.
The main benefit seems to be the use of clamp on air filters, perhaps, and I mean 'perhaps' the use of Forced Induction might benefit from something like this....

Who'd have thought a Volvo airbox would bolt right up and work like that. Craziness! Dont know how much knowledge you guys have of this Volvo part, but will it work alright with a stock engine? And is there any way to integrate the crankcase breather into it to pass inspection?
Thanks for all your input.

Alright, so it seems a lot of people use these on their 8 valve engines for a nice boost in airflow, but I couldn't find any examples of this on a 16v. I actually read somewhere that this has a smaller inlet than the stock 16v airbox. Is having this on my 16v going to hurt performance?
Maybe I'm just better off finding a stock airbox.

16 v airbox inlet dia is 70 mm, 8 valve unit is 60 mm.
volvo unit is ??

Just did a measurement of my Volvo airbox and the intake diameter is 2.75 in or 70mm. So same as the 16v one then. Of course the PO used a rubber grommet so he could fit a huge 3 1/4 in k&n that has "contoured" around the radiator fan motor lol.
I'll probably just keep the airbox and see about maybe making a cold air intake that routes down by the horn. That hot radiator exhaust can't be doing any good for the engine!

Has anyone else done this, the right way, and what are the benefits? Ive been curious about this for awhile..

There used to be an old teck note on changing the air intake location. I think it was the ATX scirocco note...I do believe these notes are still alive with Timbo.....
Anyhow, the idea was to obtain cooler air and more of it from the FRONT of the radiator and behind the grill. I can see how the lower volvo box has or could be addapted to this.
Look up the details in the old tech notes from vintagewatercooled site.![]()

Yeah i wasnt thinking of it for any increas in power, reasons.. I simply cant stand the "ductwork" in my 16v. Its a total mess.

For those of you running one of these, how did you mount it? the PO of my car had it sitting on a block of wood...![]()
