Thread: Recently lowered - few questions

  1. 10-02-2012 09:24 PM #1
I just recently lowered my car (Weekend of September 23rd) over Koni Coilovers (great-by the way, freakin love them). Only did a modest drop, just enough to make my front control arms parallel with the ground. But now I have a few questions...

After lowering, my alignment was out of wack, as expected. Steering feel was changed slightly and it would "steer itself" occasionally. I got it aligned on Tuesday (2 days after lowering) and it felt pretty good- it went straight, but my steering wheel was still cocked slightly left to go straight, and the steering feel was a bit odd and steered itself occasionally, but overall I was happy. After H2Oi weekend, my alignment felt way off again. I got it checked out on Monday (about 1 week later) and the shop said that it had gone out of alignment from where it was a week ago. I hit some normal bumps along the trip to OC, but no huge potholes and no drive bombing parking lot entrances- can anyone think of why the alignment would have gone out so quickly?

On a related note, i started thumbing through threads in the suspension technical section of the forums, and discovered the following H2Sport spindles (http://www.h2salesandservice.com/Spo...indle-assy.htm). At $800 CDN, they are a bit steep, but they seem to do a lot of good things for correcting suspension geometry and handling. I have also heard of people using TT or TT RS spindles for the same purpose. Does anyone know what the going rate on TT Spindles are, and if they are significantly different from the H2Sport spindles?

    Thanks!

You need to drive on them a minimum of 100 miles before an alignment.

I waited two weeks of commuting before getting an alignment.

They will settle with time, a lot within the first week or two.

Have you measured your ride height to check that everything is pretty even?

    Thanks for the feedback!

Ironically, I did drive over 100 miles before the alignment. I drove probably 5-10 miles on my test drive, then 90 miles back to my apartment from where the alignment was done, then to work and back 2 and a half days at about 12 miles per leg, so call it 150 miles.

I have measured twice, FTG and from ground to bumpers and side skirts, but did not do it on a perfectly flat (relatively flat) surface, or with ebrake off. Ironically I found that when the car's underside is parallel to the ground, the FTG is wrong... lower in the back. It seems that they designed the fenders to have more gap in the rear than the front.

After this alignment it has been driving straight on flat surfaces even at highway surfaces, but it still does odd pulls every now and again, and had awkward weighting during load up in turns occasionally. I guess this is just a result of ruining the stock geometry.... which leads me to my second question in my original post:

What does anyone know about the differences between the H2Sport spindles and TT or TT RS spindles? Also, is there a difference between the TT and TT RS spindles, and where to get either of them?

If this is your first time with coilovers these "pulls" you are experiencing may just be the additional feedback you get from your car being more planted on the road. When you tighten up your suspension you are going to feel more. When I drive over grooves or slight "tracks" in the road my car will pull. This is not because anything is wrong, it's just because your car is now connected with the road while a car with stock suspension will wallow/float over abnormalities in the road with the driver non the wiser.

This is my first time on coilovers, both of my other cars were lowered on springs with stock or OE replacement dampers. Well that certainly seems like it could be the case. Thanks for the feedback! makes me feel a lot better.

Anyone have any ideas about the spindles??
