The top black piece of my shifter rotates freely on my shifter. Any DIY on this or do I need a new shift knob? I already tired a few searches maybe not the correct keywords

this might work... i know it works on 5 speed mk4s

you will need either a ziptie or better a small clamp the screw type.

pull the boot up so you see the bottom of the plastic shift knob

then either ziptie or put that clamp on the bottom of the plastic piece there might be a metal piece there already just remove it or try and clamping it down more.

Finally decided to take a look at this after washing my car. if you take a pic or a small flat head screwdriver and pry off the GTI emblem at the top(its only lightly glues on) it will reveal a 3mm allen-head bolt. simply tighten that and the top and bottom haves of the golf ball will stop rotating. wait re-glue you gti emblem until after you re-install the knob so you can make it straight! hope this helps!
