I noticed transmition oil coming from the upper back area of my manual transmition, near where the shifting rods connect to the transmition, is really hard to see where is exactly coming from but it seems to be from that area. Is there a seal or O-ring that I may need to replace?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, that is exactly where it's coming from but I can't figure out how to fix it, I am afraid I will have to check when I do my clutch and remove the transmition. I don't see anyother way. Hope some expert at the forum could give us some pointers.
Thanks for uploading this picts.

maybe help maybe not.
my 98 was leaking transmission fluid but from the side of the trannie. apparently there was a circular port that is used for access to the interior of the transmission. that port is plugged with a piece that screws in place. vw tech pointed it out to me as the cause of the leak - the plug had unscrewed itself and was stopped by the trannie mount. he told me he had never seen that before and that the plug piece itself was a 'non-orderable' part, i.e. that if the part is bad the replacement piece is a new transmission.
my local indie was able to screw it back in and seal it in place for a lot less than the vw tech quoted me (no surprise) but what i found interesting was that a piece that provides access to the inner workings of the trannie had backed out causing a leak. perhaps there are multiple plugs on a manual and one on the top where yours leaks from?
