Tell your friends they are idiots, crush bent tubing will either 1. Give you no performance gain. or 2. negative performance gain. You need to get mandrel bent.

    Your friends are morons.
    For your car, you'll want:
    2.25" or 2.5" piping
    MANDREL bends
    Chambered muffler

So, go to techtonicstuning, or Autotech, or 42dd, or GOOGLE, and find yourself an exhaust system.

Louder, and it will probably sound like crap without a "good" muffler like a flowmaster, magnaflow, or a borla.

I have a TT (Techtonics) exhaust on my 96 MKIII 2.0.

It weights less than the stock system, was easy to install and it lasted 6 years before rusting away. 6 years is pretty exceptional for an aluminized exhaust in the Northeast. I was so happy with it that I just recently bought another one.

There is a SMALL amount of performance increase in the low RPM range. Don't expect a huge performance enhancement though.

I bought the aluminized system with the Dynomax muffler. It was the cheapest one they had. I was more interested in just replacing the rusted out stock system than gaining performance. It is slightly louder than the stock system but not anywhere near as loud as an aftermarket fart can.

I would run stock exhaust over a dynomax muffler any day. Yes they are the cheapest route, but they sound horrible. I would pony up a few more dollars for a magnaflow or borla.

Your friends are not idiots or morons, they are actually right. Why waste the money on a mandrel bent exhaust system for a 2.slow?? So you can get a 3-4whp gain if even?? Its a 2.0 and its automatic who cares about speed. The only purpose for an exhaust on a 2.0 is for sound. If you get one for performance than good luck to ya lol
