I think you've just gotten cruddy starters. Check your power and ground wires, make sure they're in good shape. You said the flywheel is in good shape, so it leads me to believe that the starters were just not good to begin with. Remanufactured, it could have been defective to start. The motor shouldn't be binding at all, and unless you're running like 12:1 compression, I doubt that's an issue.

2000 Beetle 2.0: starter eater?

Old made funny noise, replaced in Feb with autozone reman unit.
Still not sounding great ehen starting.
Now terrible noise when cranking, starter not engaging, engine not turning over.
Pulled starter. Gear has 1/4 inch radial play, bearing shot.
Before installing another new starter: what is eating starters?
Flywheel teeth look ok.
Sounds like starter is not retracting fast enough.
Suggestions?

'00 Beetle, 1.8t T3S60, Brute Rods, Supertech Valve train (stock cam shafts for now), port and polished small port head, custom FMIC (pain in the a** on a Bug!), Bosch 440cc injectors, 3.5FPR, Catch Can, 2.0 Coils with Iridiums, Wilwood BBK, too much other stuff to list, too much $$ spent.

OEM starter (I assume) died from 'engaged too long' (assumption).
Refurb starter died after 6 month with totally shot bearing (from overrevving from engaged too long (assumption).
Afraid that 3rd starter will not last long either.
What can cause starter gear to stay engaged too long?

Poor manufacturing. It's just a part defect. You've just been unlucky so far. You might could change out the starter relay as a preventative measure, but I doubt that is whats causing it.

Installed a new reman starter from Autozone. Sounds good, no sign of 'hanging'.
Hope this one last longer than 6 months as the previous did.
