Thread: Paint vs. Vinyl Roof/Mirrors

  1. 10-03-2012 01:53 PM #1
I need some opinions! I got a quote today to get my roof and mirrors painted Gunmetal Grey, and it was $1200, way more than I thought it might be. So my question is, is it worth to pay extra to get it painted, or would a vinyl wrap work?

I read on some local companies websites that vinyl lasts about 3-6 years. Anyone have an experience with it? I have a 2008 A3 without the open sky, so my roof is the same color as my car, and Id like it to be different. Let me know if you guys have any opinions on vinyl.

depends on the color u want. some cost more some dont and vinyl dont have clear coat over them so they wont be as glossy.

I'd go with vinyl in case you change your mind or want to sell the car down the road. It's easy to reverse, whereas paint is not, and it's more expensive.

Is vinyl something you would recommend having someone else install? I can put a cell phone cover on without bubbles, but IDK about an entire roof on a car.

Sharpie is always an option as well.

you can diy it then if u fail u let someone else do it.

i see pricing of 3000-5000 to wrap entire car.

and material is like $600 at most. rest is labor.

I would def. say vinyl since you can take it off when you sell the car, and go ahead and try diy. I've done it before and its not too hard. Just get a good squeegee of some sort and either a heat gun or hair dryer and you will need at least one other person to help you with the roof. I would say it will take you a day at most to do.

I just did a gloss black vinyl roof on my my car and love it. True, it is not as glossy as paint but it still looks great and professional.

I will try and snap a few pics of the car before class tomorrow.
