That would be sick for car trips, plug the phone into the cig lighter so it doesn't die, and run the tablet on the Internet for the whole drive watching Netflix and such

I gotta ask as far as size is that pretty comparable to double din or will ounting that be a bit different

It is actually the exact size of a double din. I was afraid there would be some fabrication that needed to be done but there is none. It fits perfect and there will be no fabrication needed beside the plastic welding it into the front face plate

I like where you're going with this, but one question from a practicality standpoint: how do you plan on power cycling the tablet when necessary? I assume you're going to have to pull the dash

The volume control of the tablet will be controlled by the headunit in the arm rest. I was thinking of porting the volume control of the headunit to one of the dead buttons where the esp button is....depending on if its a pain in the ass to adjust from the arm rest. For power cycling im going to use the app called Tasker. I will program it so that when the tablet senses voltage going to the tablet (aka the car turning on) it will wake the tablet and begin charging via the usb connection. When the car is shut off the tablet will sense no more voltage and will put that tablet into standby. Does that make sense?

Im going to port the power button as well to one of the dead buttons

I actually thought about doing this with a playbook but don't have the know how.. Looks good hope everything works out![]()

My buddy was going to put an HTC Flyer tablet in his Lincoln LS. I don't know if he ever finished it though. Anxious to see the final results! Gonna look clean. Also, if you have a Samsung Android phone, check out FoxFi. If you don't want to root your phone, it's a free hotspot app. I've had it for a couple months now and at&t hasn't said anything yet. I recommend it or as others have mentioned, xda has a ton of info.

Not to seem too much like a blackberry fanboi, but if you have a BB phone you can use the Bluetooth "bridge" to access the 4g network with the Playbook without any additional fees for tethering. It does use your data just as if you were using the phone, though. AT&T disables this feature (not the entire bridge, just the ability to access the 4G network through it), but there's a very well known site that has a workaround download that gets around the block. The latest playbook OS automatically uses wifi to stream data if you're bridged and you connect to a network, while the bluetooth connection maintains the connection with the phone.
I realize the OP already has the Samsung hardware, but perhaps someone else might try this with a Playbook. The 16G is being discontinued, so they're going pretty cheap. Even the 64G can be had for about $250. I would guess that someone could use the HDMI output for HD rear seat video output?
#52
I so want to do this as well, was thinking the playbook just cuz they are so cheap, and since it is just playing music and the basics, should be ok.

I was considering using a Nexus 7, but I'm not sure what software to use for a good UI.

I saw that video a while back. You're right; the tablet install is great, but the rest of that car is, how should I say it, "over the top"?
#56
I really wont have any reason to remove the tablet. I don't use it for anything now as it is...and with having a hard drive connected to it, I will be able to remove that if I need to add anything. They only time I would have to undo the dash to take it out is when I have to power cycle it, which will be barely ever.

Didn't see it mentioned. Where did you get the bezel? I was thinking of the same thing except using a 4-channel amp for power. I'd add a BT OBD2 fob for engine monitoring as well.![]()
#58
I got the bezel from Crutchfield.com. Fits in there perfectly. Im watching a BT OBD2 fob on ebay right now too haha. That would be really cool to have

Right now im waiting on the low profile hard cover I ordered for it from ebay. Damn China takes forever to ship stuff. Hopefully I should get it in another 10 days, and can keep posting pics of the progress.

Already bought Torque and Tasker for the tablet, so im ready to go!

Ok guys here is a quick, small update on what is going on with this install. The slim case finally came in from China (that only took a month). I decided to go without the dock, it made the tablet not sit flush in the face plate. Instead im going to notch out small holes in the sides of the frame for the power chord and the 3.5mm jack to come out. Tonight I will be attaching the tablet to the face plate in a semi permanent fashion with Plasti-Weld. I will post pictures of that tonight. Oh and one more thing....just a little sneak peak of some software hacking I did while waiting for the case to come. Enjoy!
