Thread: MPLS and a couple of questions

  1. 10-03-2012 06:15 PM #1
Good afternoon, just like the title says, at my office they are trying to create an mpls and i have a couple of questions.

First they are asking for the IP address and port number that they will be using.

As far as i remember they should do it through the IP that i gave them and that's all.

Now they are telling me they want to do it through the FW so i have to give them the IP address on my FW, but the trick is at the port number. What port number should i give them, or what exactly do they mean by the port number, do they mean the physical port on my FW?

I'm having the biggest brain fart right now TIA
I had a funny signature before, and it went to waste with the switch!

MPLS - multiprotocol line switching. It's basically a direct proprietary link to another network, a private line basically instead of a VPN over shared lines (internet). A company with two different locations would use an MPLS between the two sites.

OP, they're asking for the IP of your firewall and which TCP port to use, not the physical port.

My old company had an MPLS cloud that all our offices were interconnected to.

Thanks i was really breaking my head over this specially since the guy that i was speaking with was using the direct translation of a lot of things which made it more confusing.

I work in managed security, and deal with MPLS all the time.

MPLS *usually* uses a dedicated router to connect your LAN to the MPLS and another route on the remote end, with destination routes in each router. Like a VPN, it is not usually port-specific.

They may want to know the IP of your firewall to determine the default gateway for the MPLS router to use, but you'll probably have to add the route to your default gateway (firewall or router or possibly a layer 3 switch) to get it to work correctly. Who is your MPLS provider?
