I am not a mechanic, but I have heard of a G grind cam. I always thought it was a hi performance cam. Is that what you have there?

well after measuring the cam it is only a .40 lift on the intake lobe which is the standard lift on the common 8v head.

It is my understanding the G cam is more in the .42 or .44 lift range i belive also, I think the G cams were solid lifter ... but not sure about that.

cc'ed the combustion chambers, looks like they are 33cc, for compression calculations.

How much did you pick that head up for? I have a 2E head I've been getting ready to sell, wondering what they'd run for used.

well the PG head came off a whole G60 engine I bought a few years back...it was 100 for the whole engine...

The big valve head pictured above was 30$

Im pretty thrifty but, I think the big valve heads fetch a few more dollars.

I would say $50 is a reasonable price depending on condition...

    Let me get this straight:

new valves: about $175 for set of 8
    camshaft: at least $100
valve rockers (metal cap thingies): $90 for a set of 8
those little threaded plastic things that seal the fuel injectors to the head: $40 for a set of 4

    Entire head assembly: $30
    Makes sense.

Just noting that because I planned to sell the 2E head to pay for incidental parts. With old Volkwagens it seems to go something like:

    sweet-looking Cabriolet: $650
    just the engine: $400
all the little replacement parts you need to make the damn thing run: $1800
    basket full of b!tches: priceless

The 30-50 $ I speak of is just the head... used!

Spend as much as you like rebuilding it...that is up to you!!!

I take stuff apart to see the condition
you can lap down the valve seats yourself if the valves look good.
you shouldnt need new valve caps.
you dont need a new cam...
new stem seals are needed $12
there is cost involved in having a machine shop maybe check the head for warp, and condition of valve guides.
