      Just bought a 1977 Gti just wondering if anyone knew how many we're built in 77? Or how many miami blue ones were built for that matter. Asked google already. Only site that might've told me was German

      Gti's didn't come to the us until 1983 legally. Even if it was a grey or black market car miami blue was not a factory gti color choice, atleast not in europe. If you mean you bought a 1977 miami blue rabbit converted to gti specs...then the color seems fairly abundant.

      If you have a real miami blue gti...it is likely the only 1

      Yup, it's a 77 so it's German. But whether it's a real GTI from Germany or not is to be debated. If it really is, it most likely is the only one as Vr6DubNY said.

      A couple things to point out here. First GTi US spec cars only came in Red, Black, White and Silver and only in 83/84

      European spec Gti came in the same colors as the US spec cars but also had a Dark blue and I believe Dark Green option. They were produced from 76-84.

      No Miami blue EVER! So what you have is: A. a Euro/Canadian spec GTi painted Miami blue at some point or B. a Euro/Canadian spec Rabbit that has been brought up to GTi spec

      ^^ As we all know the parts swaps for these cars are super easy and common so it could be any combination or cars, parts and specs from any number of markets. Use the vin decoder maybe that will help

      This car is a 77 and a grey market car has every Gti part down to the engine number. Tried the vin decoder but my vin wouldn't work.1773465400 red stripe dash with og vin tag with og rivets. red stripe bumpers. front apron has square holes for duckbill. rear emblem says golf/gti has the full sticker kit. not a repaint ever. 100,000 kilometers gauge has a vw motorsports logo/sicker on the face? red stripe grill a bunch of gti emblems. anything else i should look for?

      I'm very skeptical. I built a '77 into a GTI and I don't recall that blue ever being a GTI color in '77
      furthermore, the perfect placement of the OE US market side markers makes me wonder as well

      also, in '77 the car would have been equipped with non-remote mirrors

      I spot several things wrong with those pictures. First the steering wheel (okay its easily swapped), The seats (or at least headrests..okay easily swapped) Guage cluster is non GTi (easily swapped), The side markers are US spec, The Paint is non GTi (easily painted).... are you catching onto the theme here Its a CLONE built with GTi parts, nothing more.

      Was told today the car is Canadian by prior owner and the signals are Canadian spec in 77. What do Canadian instrument clusters look like for Gti?

      not that it has anything do do with this thread (nice car BTW)... But, there was another Euro GTI color that is the rarest of them all. Its some sort of brown that looks like dusty mauve! There is a pic of one floating around vortex with 16" BBS RXII's color matched!

      Factory GTI colors:
      Mars Red
      Alpine White
      Diamond Silver Metallic
      Black
      Lhasa Green Metallic
      Helios Blue Metallic

      No Miami Blue.

      European GTI engines:
      1.6L EG
      1.8L DX

      1977 Golfs and GTIs, according to brochures, had the metal bumpers, not the plastic bumpers; they also had single-rounds, not dual-rounds.

      1977 GTIs had plaid seats; the sport steering wheel pictured in your car is 1977 GTI-correct.

      If it is indeed a gray-market car from Europe, it had North American side-markers installed per import regulations. The VIN won't tell you anything; if the car still has a build sheet sticker somewhere, or a build/ID plate riveted somewhere in the engine bay (slam panel/rad support, strut tower, etc.), that might tell you a tad more. If the Canadian bought the car as-is from Europe, someone in Europe probably GTI-ified a plain-Jane Golf... not exactly unusual.

      unlikely even if it was imported

      most likely it was some tuner's swap project in the early 80's to get the best mk1 he could afford

      oh and this...

      that is not a stock engine code tag
      you would have to remove that fake looking tag and look at the actual block which is stamped.

      its probally not an EG.

      thanks for the links but ive already tried those. they dont tell **** with my vin.so google failed not me. Also the car is from canada, imported from germany .not a us car so those production figures on the link you suggested arent accurate for my situation. yeah not going to remove the"fake engine tag"..... i purchased a 02 jetta vr6 glx sport wagen in green pearl. color wasnt available for the car i had, but yet it was special ordered by the dealer. im the second owner of the car with all records. recaro 8 way power seats manual trans every option available besides awd. had euro only options on the car yet a us hatch. Mabey this car might fall into that catagory? possible special ordered color by someone that worked at the dealer like my jetta situation. Going to apply for a birth certificate to figure this out. id like to be the only one with a miami blue gti. i know its a longshot... Probally just a 77 miami blue golf with someones stolen 1978 gti parts on it

      well..ok

      im sure someone who has datasheets will chime in and try to provide you with euro/canadian data
      while you may be one of the few in the US who own a "euro gti", there are plenty of Europeans and germans who own thousands of them. get over it

      i like the car anyways, but you really gotta polish that paint and clean the dust off the engine
      otherwise its worthless pile of junk
      IE: get it running and drive it.

      Seeing the dual rounds with the small tails just throws the whole thing off for me.

      But in any case, it's a nice collection of parts that needs to get cleaned AND driven!

      Worthless pile of junk Ouch. Mabey I should just crush it since its been sitting since 04 and got a little dirty.. . Its at least a rust free 77 Miami blue car with a **** ton of early mk1 goodness. I've never seen an older than 79 golf let alone a Miami blue euro one. I won't get over this score for awhile. Anyway thanks for the tips if anyone knows more about this particular car/Canadian/ euro production figures please pm me thank you.

      The VIN up through 1980 is a 10-digit VIN; it tells you basically nothing about the car:
      17 = Golf I
      7 = 1977
      3 = unknown
      4 = unknown
      65400 = sequential production number

If the first number on that plate, 5330, is the original serial number (you'll have to look behind the tag for an etching), that would give it an original assembly date of September 1976. That tag points to a potential factory rebuild, or a factory replacement engine. Supplying that engine's serial number(s) with your car's birth certificate order will verify through VAG if that engine is original to the car. The certificate will tell you what engine the car originally came with (EG, JH, EN, etc.), but it will not tell you if that specific engine that is in the car was installed on the assembly line in 1977.

      The seat cloth is like the '83/'84 Rabbit GTI seat cloth. Someone can correct me, but I don't recall seeing that pattern prior to the '80s.

      All signs point to the car not being an original GTI; probably modified in Europe or in Canada at some point. Certainly worthy of restoring, though.

      thank you i was wondering what those other numbers were for. new the k2 one, but was stumped on the others. my 914 had a similar replacement motor engine tag when the motor was swapped under warranty, so i believe your right on that one.
