I suppose it might be justified due to the squib on the positive terminal of the RHS battery but I think it's just a piece of general CYA.

Hi all,
as winter (and a 3000 mile trip across Europe) looms I bought a new LH Battery today. Last time I changed one I just disconnected it and replaced/reconnected the new one.
However, today I read the TOC on replacing the LH Battery, this states that I should also disconnect the starter battery prior to replacing the convenience one. Is this strictly necessary? If so, why?
Many thanks as always,
Stu

Mike,
I thought you were getting closer to have a look at the battery, not my A!

I didn't board so being able to go home at 5:30 made my day. Apparently, boarding made your whole week.

Hi Stu:
It's a safety precaution to avoid any risk of arcing and sparking if the positive cable that connects to the left battery should happen to touch the frame of the car while you are removing and re-installing the left battery. The left battery is very heavy, and it is very difficult to get it in and out of the car.
Easiest way of accomplishing this precaution is to just disconnect the right battery from the car's electrical circuit - once that is done, and once you disconnect the left battery terminals, you have no risk of arcing and sparking.
I don't think that the pyrotechnic device on the right battery positive terminal has anything to do with the matter.

Please don't send me technical questions via IM - instead, post your questions onto the end of the most appropriate thread in the FAQ, so that everyone can benefit from the answer, and everyone can assist in providing the answer. Thanks, Michael

Thanks Michael,
you were right about the weight!! It is NOT the easiest task in the world. It only took about 20 minutes to swap the battery over, it then took anther 20 just to get that bl**dy retaining bracket reconnected properly!
I chose to leave the RH battery connected. I still don't trust German electricians!!

Hi Stu,
If you doubt the white-coated Techs in Dresden, here is what the beige-overall'd Brits at Crewe say we must do!
Chris
PS - for completeness, just in case anyone with a Bentley stumbles on this page, they also point out that CGT (but not C or FS) have an extra cable between the left and right battery + which means the battery cables remain live even when disconnected from one of the batteries, so must be put in a plastic bag while off.
