I am curious what other A3 TDI owners are getting mileage wise. I feel mine is not even close to comparable to my friends MK4 1.9 or to others on the forums (JSW, etc). Now is it because of the DSG, I noticed 6th is shorter in the DSG.

I just got back from an 800 mile trip where about 700 miles of it were 75-80mph with the cruise set. Hand calculated was 37mpg. I am bone stock other than lowered>wheels.

What is everyone else getting? Please post mods as well so we can get an idea of what helps with mileage.

This is what my MFD typically reads, always around 40-45 on the highway. (I don't always do 90 unless I am in rural nevada where I won't see a car for miles.)

a friend with a GTD (same engine) gets 45 when highway driving at 70mph, much above that and it falls off. 55-65 get another 5-10mpg. Another friend with a jetta wagon reports the same.

I'm only averaging 32-34mpg at the moment granted I only have 1400mi on my odometer. I think it's because our engines are new. Ive been reading that the tdi engine doesn't fully break in until 50k-60k. That's when you will see the greatest mpg.

I'm not really too worried about the mpg tho, I got it more for the reliability.

My wife drives our '10 Golf TDI. I noticed her average is at 35 mostly city driving. She is a gentle driver, but most likely doesn't know how to apply conservation techniques.
I have to say, I'm a little disappointed at that. It would seem that the reports are somewhat inflated. Even so, that 35mpg is significantly more than my 20mpg, driving my 2.0t in the city.

It's definitely cause the engine is still new. My friend has had two Jetta TDIs and he told me that after about 100+ k miles is when those engines are really broken in.

Okay, so I am not the only one averaging this kind of mpg. Getting it broke in too will help, I am just at 5k miles now.

    Anyone have software?

Pretty much stock. I average 35 mpg around the city and 42 mpg on the highway.

My highway driving is limited but when you run through an entire tank at highway speeds that is where it really shines. Best mileage I have ever seen was when I drove from Vegas to Seattle and averaged low 50s the entire time.

My buddy gets 50s everyday on his commute into Chicago in his 2010 Jetta TDI. I tend to think perhaps the Jetta and the JSW have a bit better aerodynamics? A3 typically averages the lowest for some reason.

Driving 75+mph makes it significantly harder on the engine. Air resistance increases at a much faster rate at those speeds. So every 5 mph really is noticeable on fuel economy.

Well I'm going to see what I can milk it for this weekend. Headed to Idaho and most of the roads are 65-70 mph. its 600 miles round trip, I'm going to try and do it on one tank

Does the TDI have a 14 gallon tank like the FWD 2.0T?

Lol 100k is a bit much. Most Diesels you need to run 20-30k to break them in then their efficiency should go up.

Most of the driving I do with the car is around town though

I feel mine is not even close to comparable to my friends MK4 1.9 or to others on the forums (JSW, etc). Now is it because of the DSG, I noticed 6th is shorter in the DSG.
Emissions plays a huge part in this statement, as well as engine size, engine power. Its not really "fair" to compare a 1.9 TDI to the 2.0 CR TDI's. When comparing A3 CR TDI vs other CR TDI's weight and rolling resistance. The A3 is the heaviest for the small TDI's (golf, JSW, then A3), and the frontal area is different among them (A3 being largest). I have not seen any good comparsions between JSW DSG vs A3 DSG, but I would suspect they are very close in overall ratings. Just so few A3 TDI's to compare to really make good comparsions vs the JSW DSG imo.

Yup the tdi is 14 gallons.

BTW I get around 42mpg highway and 30 city, right on par with the EPA est with 10k on the odometer.

I'm always surprised when I see the mileage of the TDI A3. I would assume that it would get higher. I had a B5.5 1.9TDI passat wagon and it averaged about 37MPG in the city and around 49MPG on the HWY and it's a much larger and heavier car than the A3.

See and that is what I hear from other 1.9 TDI owners. My friend in Salt Lake gets close to 50 on mixed driving (hwy/city) and that is with some spirited driving occasionally. He has exhaust, chip and intake.

I just got back from my road trip to Idaho last night and kept my foot out of it most of the way. The fastest I went was 75 and most of the time the cruise was set at 68-70 mph. When I got up there I fueled up with 6.7 gallons for the 310 mile trip, which wasn't too bad, 46.2mpg. Then again that was all highway, and not a single stop on the way. Once we were in boise over the weekend I drove 147 miles on 4.4 gallons which is around 33 mpg, all city driving. We were running late last night so I had the cruise set at 80 the majority of the way home and it looks like I got somewhere around 38-39 mpg (haven't fueled up yet for the exact numbers).

So it looks like I am averaging right around 39mpg overall, given I am <6k miles on the odometer, I still expected better.

I would really like to hear from someone that has mods and to see the differences. I know when I did the DPF delete it helped me out around 6-7 mpg on the highway and 3-4 mpg in town. I just want to know if it is worth the money to throw down or if I should just let it break in some more.

That B5 probably doesn't stand up to new emissions standards either. Maybe the new standards caused a problem for fuel mileage.

Sorry just reread my post, typo earlier - I averaged about 45mpg on the hwy although a buddy of mine borrowed my B5.5 and drove it from Seattle to Eugene and back and averaged something like 52mpg on that trip. Also, my Passat was the 2.0 TDI engine the Jettas had the 1.9.

My friend who maxed out my mileage is the same person who talked me into test driving it before I bought it. He has an 02 Jetta and that he's done some mods to gets something like 55mpg on the HWY in that.

    Lets clarify some things please...

The A3 Premium Plus TDI has a curb weight of almost 34xxlbs, the B5.5 Passat Wagon was rated 35xxlbs. So the B5.5 is not much heavier than the A3.

Comparing a 1.9TDI to a CRTDI is similar to comparing a MPI engine to a gDI setup. Its just not logical when you have to take into consideration emissions are what lower the CRTDI ratings down, the old 1.9TDI did not have to deal with the emissions requirements that the new CRTDI's obviously do. No DPF which uses fuel to keep temperatures down, just removing that setup has netted 10-15% gain in economy (with performance setups)

The 1.9TDI put out 90hp/155lbs torque, in 2004 it jumped to 100hp/177lbs torque. The CRTDI is 140hp/236lbs torque, obviously a slightly larger motor, that puts out a substantial amount of power vs the stock versions of the 1.9, And with that, I have a car that can do 70-75mph on the highway and maintain tank averages (using miles/gallons to fillup) over 40mpg. My overall average is 36.7mpg using fuelly to track this information.

Interesting, I never realized that Passat was that light.

Actually, I wasn’t comparing the 1.9TDI although I did refer to it since the driver who managed to average over 50mpg on a 500+ mile in my Passat is also a 1.9 owner, but was referring to my B5.5 which was a completely stock 2.0 L I4 TDI DPF which put out 134hp and 247 lb-ft and that I averaged over 40mpg even with my lead foot.
