Make sure you flush it thoroughly and you'll be fine.
I just got some blue g11 coolant planning to flush and replace it. Now I'm wondering if I should have gotten the pink g12 instead? The car has green coolant in it now, will the residue react with the new g11 at all? Do I need to take special precautions when flushing it? They say its not good to mix g11 and g12.
Why is there no DIY for flushing the coolant on a 16v? I guess it's just common knowledge? I've heard about the "air in the system overheating" problems, and seen a few short replies about how to burp it out, but I'd really like some complete instructions about how to get things completely flushed out and properly filled so there's no issues. Call me a noob, but I'm 17, and I haven't had a huge amount of experience, but I can usually figure things out ok with a decent explanation.
flush a coolant system:
#2, pressure flush using a high pressure system while the engine is running
shops tend to do this
however it can inadvertently blow your headgasket if used improperly.
#1 driveway flush
USING DISTILLED WATER (.89cents/gallon)
drain and collect the old coolant
refill with distilled water
run engine Open the Heater valve on the AC
run engine until radiator fan kicks on twice
shut off engine and allow to cool (30-60 minutes)
drain water/coolant mix
using Pensoil Radiator Flush (small yellow bottle)
pour in flush treatment, fill with distilled water
Run engine until warm again
allow to cool
drain flush treatment
refill with Distilled Water
run engine until warm
shut off and drain
refill with Distilled water but dont run it this time
drain it then refill with 50/50 mix of your Coolant
DISTILLED WATER does not contain metal particles that Tap/Garden hose water contains
these metal particles CAN and WILL rust out your coolant passages over time
Hey thanks for the info! I got som lubro moly rad cleaner that should work in place of the Pennzoil rad flush. I'm gonna install a new overflow tank, level sensor, and heater valve; guess I should do that in between flushes sometime. Should I fill it through the tank and drain it through one of the lower hoses?
