I thought I would share what I found now that I just pulled the head. You can read more at: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...is-Shift-Ouch!

So, looks like I'll be hunting down a replacement head. I don't think it's repairable. The parts acquisition will now start.

Wow, bummer man. I think you found the problem. Can you post a pic of a non damaged combustion chamber? A friend and I have been talking combustion chamber design and am curious. I am guessing the side that does not have the un-shrouded valves is the exhaust side and the intake valves broke.

    Good luck with the repair.
Would the person who took the step ladder yesterday please bring it back or further steps will be taken

Same sort of thing seemed to have happened to a guy called Predator on R32.OC that i sold a head to. It was either one or two valves broke off and floated about in the cylinder head area. He was luck not to damage the cylinder bores, just had a replacement head from me and a few new pistons. I have several heads and an engine laying about so when you work out what you want PM me and i will see what i can sort for you.

    Ouch.

From the looks of it, you hit the pockets on most of the other pistons as well. I think it is interesting where the contact sports are on the valves themselves. Not where I would have imagined.

Pop the rockers off and check the clips holding the lifters if you don't mind.

I did and they all look fine. nothing bent or out of place. I also noticed that each of the valves had hit areas as well.

Now that I have to pick up a head I'll start looking for one. Didn't someone on here put on a 3.6 head or something?

I dumped the clutch at 5K, was going through the gears. Went from 4th to 3rd under full throttle. I slammed the clutch back in and cruised as normal. Didn't notice anything was wrong at the time. The R was running slightly rough, I mean very slightly a few days later. Nothing I felt was a big deal. It then went away. Drove the R for about a year. Up until 3 weeks ago the R was fine. I had launched it several other times with no issues. I did some errands in the am with my father, went to the store, turned the R off, got back in and it wouldn't start. It would turn over but wouldn't fire. Checked fuses, replaced 409 relay nothing. Finally broke down and had her towed to stealership.

Tech in service said he pulled plug #1, something I should have done but I just didn't think of at the time. The electrodes were gone and the bottom of the plug was cracked. I asked him to put a scope down in the plug hole. Something he kinda fought me on. When he did I could see the valve seat sitting on top of the piston.

Ok, tow her home please.. I started the breakdown from there. So, now my wife is calling the R the "6million dollar R". "We can rebuild her, stronger, faster, We have the technology"
