Anyone know where to you can get new TDI 5th gear sets, other than the dealership? Google is totally failing me on this... (or maybe I'm failing google with crappy search terms? idno...)

oddly enough I just came across that DIY not even 2 minutes ago and was looking through it.

I'm still trying to decide if I wanna do this or not (really, its just a money thing). The bolt holding my 5th gear completely backed out on me the other day going down the road, so I've got the end cover off of the trans already.. It's not much more to get it changed out, and considering that 90% of my driving is highway I would definitely benefit from it...

Do it and report back. I'd love to actually get some feedback man.

im tempted.. saw a gear set in classifieds for about $200 the other day... i'd be able to report back some good MPG changes as well; I currently average 30-31 in the car; I'm predicting 33-35 with the tdi gear, maybe...

5th gear end cover gasket: 02A301215A

It's really, really not worth it unless you drive 30,000miles on the highway a year

It takes near 75,000 miles to recoup the cost at that point still.

if you can get it cheap, and already need a 5th gear, then by all means get it.

Do you have a 02A transmission that you are installing this in? Your profile shows a 96 Golf Harlequin which uses an 020 transmission and the 5th gear is completely different than the TDI's 5th gear.

here is some info on O2O 5th gears:
    http://www.brokevw.com/5thswap.html

    For an o2o: http://www.autotech.com/product/oem-....html?fromcat=
    http://www.mjmautohaus.com/catalog/p...roducts_id=990

TDI 02A/02J 5th gears, now I know a little more about these gears:
Summary of "Overdrive" Ratios (with part numbers)
    • 30:39 = 0.769 (02A 311 361 N : 02A 311 158 L)
    • 34:45 = 0.756 (02A 311 361 Q : 02A 311 158 E)
    • 29:39 = 0.744 (02A 311 361 AD : 02A 311 158 AE)
    • 33:46 = 0.717 (02A 311 361 M : 02A 311 158 R)
    • 28:40 = 0.700 (02A 311 361 AM : 02A 311 158 AF)
    • 32:47 = 0.681 (02D 311 361 : 02D 311 158)
    • 27:41 = 0.658 (02Z 311 361 A : 02Z 311 158 A)
    • 23:37 = 0.622 (02Z 311 361 : 02Z 311 158)

Borrowed from this very informative thread:
