The question is more like "why is it everyone treats mk4 owners in this manner? Look at his post count; he's looking for help and clearly hasn't spent enough time on here to know there's a section for his car's model.
Because no one on this bloody forum takes anyone (especially vw owners, even more so for mk4 owners) seriously and treats them like idiots. Dickheads? Very appropriate. All of you.
This forum is full of bullsh!t.
My guess is it's something idle related. My Mazda Protege had something similar; it was an EGR valve problem (emitted gas recirculation?) and it would start up fine. After it warmed up, the idle was so rough it would drown itself. I don't know how Volks's systems are, but my brother had the same problem on his and got so bad he replaced the valve. Hope that helps you narrow down the problem.![]()

Wonder what the responses would have been if the car in question had not been a VW product. Besides, isn't the MK III the new MK IV?

unplug the MAF sensor, see if it runs. if it does, you need a new MAF sensor. Known problem on those cars.
And ignore all the *******s. As one example, Mellberg is a loser who thinks hes cool because he drive a POS 80s VW. The rest aren't any better.
how come a transvestite donkey witch is next to you and why is it wearing a dress?
Say 'what' again. Say 'what' again, I dare you, I double dare you mother****er, say what one more goddamn time!

No idea but the OP has mk3. Better question is why does VW related thread bring all the azzholes out?
For other "car enthusiasts" on this forum, some people actually don't mind working on their cars. I know it's hard to understand for you armchair racers, internet experts.
As for OP,
Check the mk3 section and 2.0 section in "technical forum".

Nope; mk3s ended here in 1999. In 1999.5 we got the mk4s; his is a 2001. Mind you, it's more or less the same 2.0 8v engine from mk3 to mk4. Although I'm a little confused why he calls it a GTI. Mk4 GTIs only got the 1.8T or VR6.
Why people hat on Volkswagens? I don't know honestly, but my best guess is they're bored or ran out of clouds to yell at. It's the same people who write articles in the last page of the newspaper complaining about their neighbour's cat, or the population of squirrels being too high.
Then why comment like a retard? Why couldn't you just offer him some good advice as opposed to tell him off? I really gotta know.
Or not answer at all.

I thought the same thing.
But yes, unplug the MAF while the car is running, and if it doesnt change then there is your issue, or at least part of the problem. You can even clean the sensor in a bag of alcohol if needed, and save you some money. They usually just get stuff gunked up on them, happened to the 2001 I owned, and cleaning it fixed the issue.

Mk4 2.0?
I see these come in with the same problem every so often. It could be the ignition control module. On these motors you can buy the module and coil as one assembly from your local auto parts store.
Check the date of manufacture, there is a cutoff at 09/2000.
