Hi, I'm looking for a better MDI cable. I want one that can load my tagged songs onto my iPhone. Also, I'd like it to be able to skip Spotify tracks when I'm connected via MDI. Anyone know of a good cable. I saw someone used this one, but it seems pretty expensive: http://www.amazon.com/000-051-446-J-...hu-rd_add_1_dp Any cheaper options out there?

It's expensive because it's OEM and works.

You can get it from DriverGear: https://www.drivergear.vw.com/vw10/S...000051446J.asp

Use a discount code for another 10-20% off.

As far as I know it's the only one available. That's the one I have in case I have passengers with an iPhone.. lol.

Thanks for the tip on the discount code. I just figured there'd be some cheap Chinese knock-off cable for $5-10 but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I wonder how long it will take for a Lightning MDI cable to be released. Waiting on my Apple adaptor for now.

My MDI cable will charge, and the radio shows music playing but theres no sound. The cable is too short and all the replacements are the same length from what Ive found. Poor design. cant see the phone without pinching the cable with the arm rest. Unless I'm missing something. Still love my R tho. Even after I push waaaayyy too hard around traffic circles and the breaks freak out on me. ESP!

I just got the apple 30 pin to lightning adapter unfortunately it doesn't work with the MDI. It says no audio files. I guess we will have to wait for an official VW Lightning cable

I really only use the MDI cable for charging, so hopefully it does at least that. I should have mine next Tuesday. The lightning connector is great, but the transition has been a bit rough. I can't imagine VW will take too long to release a new cable.

I just checked it and my standard ipod/old iphone style MDI cable with the lightning adapter hooked to my iphone 5 works perfect for charging and music. Not sure why yours says "no audio files" DeanCorp but mine works 100% as it did with the iphone 4 and my ipod.

Sorry guys, XSSIVE is correct, it does work properly. I have several friends who have MDI's in their cars and have tried with the adapter and all are working perfectly. I just realised that my issue is, I don't store any songs on my iPhone itself, I use iTunes Match. Therefore, since it isn't locally stored, there are technically no audio files on the device. I just bought the new iPod Nano which arrived today, I will test it out later on and report back but I am sure it will be fine.

Good to hear. I got the 0.2m adaptor, so with that, the MDI cable should be long enough to leave the iPhone on the seat or cupholder.

Yep confirmed today works perfectly. The issue was iTunes Match, not the adapter.

Is anyone having trouble with sound quality through the MDI? I have an iPod plugged in through the MDI and it sounds terrible- all scratchy and super low quality. All my MP3's on the iPod are the highest kb/sec quality and sound fine through headphones. Since its a direct connect, I figured this would be even better quality than bluetooth (but even that sounds pretty bad). My guesses:

    1) bad MDI cable
    2) bad connection from the MDI port to the stereo somewhere
    3) older iPod (80gb from 2008)

If anyone has had similar quality issues and found a solution, please let me know. I have a long road trip coming up and would like to resolve this beforehand.

If you can't find a good solution before your trip. As a last effort for good quality sound you can always use the aux-in port.
