Thread: The New Moo: Version 1.8

  1. 10-05-2012 05:36 PM #1
    Hey all!

I don't post much these days, but I thought I'd post up some updates on the GTI.

Over the Summer I was offered a full 1.8T w/ 5-speed transmission from a 2001 Jetta for a price that I couldn't refuse so... the 16v has been ditched in favour of the 1.8T. The swap and engine maintenance was completed in 3 days, and I drove the car as an N/A 1.8 for a bit until I could get it into the shop for piping

    Motor being situated:

After a rather long wait, I got the car back from the shop with shiny stainless piping and a FMIC. Intercooler is located behind the grille, for added stealthiness.

The plan is to do the same conservative build as I did on my previous MkIV GTI. A K04-001 with all the usual bolt ons etc... Not looking for crazy power, just a reliable FWD go-kart.

    Next on the agenda:

    - Swap the new transmission in
    - New wheels
    - Paint the new-to-me faded passenger side door
    - Start adding more power / More engine bay cleanup.

Last photo of my car from this Summer:

    See y'all next season

Thanks for all the love guys

The new wheels are nothing exciting, just something my man had kicking around from one of his previous cars. The advantage is I'll be able to run a 195/50/15. No more tire spinning lol. I'll keep the Zenders for "pretty car days"

lol my buddy who orchestrated the swap is a 1.8T conversion genius lol. I just took care of all the small stuff my little girl hands were capable of.
We had the 16v out on Friday, the bay was cleaned the new motor was mocked in on Saturday and by Sunday it was wired up and running. It fired up first crank... that was such a great moment!

lol I don't think I ate or slept that week... I was so damn nervous, but everything went really smoothly

Aside from SPEC sending me a clutch disc that was too large and they won't do anything about it, so now I have a stage 2 SPEC pressure plate and a new OEM 16v disc. Ah well, transmission will be swapped anyways...

Don't bother w/ SPEC crap. I had a stage 3 clutch in my old VR and it was meh. I'd go clutchmaster or southbend personally.

lol the swap is done, the clutch is in. I paid virtually nothing for it... I didn't care so much as the transmission should be swapped out next season. I'm much more familiar with MkIV parts... should be good.

I'm sure it'll be fine, and can't beat virtually free; I paid out the ass for mine a few years back.

When you swap transmissions, throw a LSD in there. That was my favorite upgrade to the drivetrain of my old mk3.

For what I paid, I can't complain too much... the clutch has been ok thus far lol

and yeah I would like to put in an LSD in the future! I had a nice K04 build I did on my former MkIV and I'm hoping to do the same in this car, I want reliable, modest power lol. an LSD would definitely help in the MkII though ... :p

The pathetic part is that the passenger side door, is actually that faded... I swapped it on last year to replace the original one as some genius former owner thought it would be a good idea to rivet the trim to the door. I had a large peek-a-boo rust hole
