2002 a4 3.0 flex pipe question

My drivers side flex pipe has a hole in it and is loud and annoying...is it possible to replace just that section? The dealer told me the whole cat would have to be changed, but i just had the passenger side replaced, so im trying to avoid another expensive job like that. Thanks

Yes. Many muffler shops can remove the downpipes and weld in a new flex section. Some shops can even weld in a new section without removing the pipes from the car. However, while it may be cheaper--to weld without removing the pipes--it is tricky to weld the top section, and if it isn't done properly it will leak.

Thanks man. Gotta love dealership service....quoted me $1900 to replace the cat and said thats the only way to repair it....

That's why I avoid the dealer. Many other Audi models use the same type of design of downpipes with flex pipe and cats, that the rear system slips over. After years of winter roads, it is not at all uncommon for these joints to fail.

I just had the flex joints repaired on my 00 S4. $60.00 to weld in two new flex joints. However, I had removed the pipes and just dropped them off. (it's a real pain in the rear to remove the pipes though)
