Hey folks,
I purchased a '13 GTI on September 28th and I am noticing alot of black colored buildup on my exhaust tips. Should I be concerned or is this normal on a new engine?
My knowledge is limited in this area so any help would be appreciated.

it is normal, usually have to clean them every two weeks to a month to maintain them from making them harder to clean off

While filing up my car at a gas station I grab one of the free towels and give my exhaust tips a quick one over, that keeps them looking pretty good.
SOme CHrome polish will also go a long way to preserve them looking good, otherwise you can jsut use some kind of high temp resistant black paint and put a couple of coats on your tips.

this is normal, just do yourself a favor and keep up with cleaning them. I more or less ignored mine for the first 5 months of ownership, while only occasionally hitting them with the foam gun/pressure washer and not applying much agitation.
if you find that you can't keep up with cleaning them ~bi-weekly-monthly or so and they build up, I recommend checking out Chemical Guy's "Grime Reaper" all purpose cleaner. it dilutes very well and is plenty strong. hit my BLACK tips with this, let it sit for a few minutes, hosed off, then hit it again and went with a towel, hit it again and went over it with a brillo pad for about 20 seconds a side and they looked good as new. Only took a few minutes and not much elbow grease at all.

Never dull works really well for this. It comes in a little chrome colored can with it's own material, take a small piece out, wipe the tips with it like wax, wait for it to dry & wipe off. Do not use on anything with a clear coat as it will damage the clear.
