Please share your friends/neighbors get rich quick schemes! Don't we all have that one neighbor/family/friend? It just never ends does it?!

    My Example:
Tired-a-listenin' to this retirement age couple. For the last 5 years we've been subjected to one thing after another. Keep in mind these are professionals with a $4,000/mos 10 years left mortgage. Apparently they didn't save enough for retirement (my initial impression)...now I just think they wanna retire large & in charge?!

2007 They boldly announce (to the entire neighborhood) they are retiring/moving to Mexico for the tax breaks, cheaper lifestyle, servants on call, etc. Gonna buy a condo on the Ocean. Thinkin' it may be this one here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosarito_Beach Cool, knock yourselves out!

2008 Blah blah Sister sent out an email and all you have to do is connect this "money" with charities and we'll get a cut of it. Millions of course! $$$ Despite her dragging neighbors to "events" with them...and sending stuff off. Nothing ever happened. Ever.

Beach Update! They vacation there. Love it. Look at all kinda properties. Not sure what they want, so they wait. MMmmmmkay!

2009 Real Estate $10,000,000 loan iz gonna happen and he is gonna start flipping real estate companies and make millions. They send in a few $$$$ to the people who are supposedly gonna approve this loan "any time now". We even look at properties, cars, with them. Nothing ever happens. 3 years later & still hoping and sitting on phone calls re: when the money is gonna come in.

Beach Update! They get all the paperwork done, take a co-worker down with them. All have a large time and things are perfect. An hour long pics presentation upon their return. Meh.

2010 They start selling http://www.enagic.comwater units on the side. Take it to trade shows, etc. Alkaline unit is $4,000 and sits on your countertop. People stop by for gallons of the water. We even try it and like it. Gonna make $$$$! Wait, what? I thought it was a health thing? "It is." Oh, so it's like this other MLM stuff http://www.melaleuca.com/ProductStore/ProductStore.aspx you have also been selling? No, it's different they say. Okay?

Beach Update! Their friend puts an offer and eventually buys "their place" to be in Mexico! Congrats all around and yet a weird jealousy vibe appears. Friend spends easily >$500,000. Curiously it is the same amount as their reported life savings.

2011 Wife starts selling some jewelry line on the side. Mostly for ladies. Has a few parties. Sells some http://www.silpada.com stuff to friends & neighbors. Seems harmless enough until they start strong arming you into buying your Holiday gifts ONLY from there. Yeah, no thanks!

2012 He invests online where you e-send $600 to be held in Iraq? When the currency "converts" you'll get major returns on your initially paltry investment. He soon invests more. This is now the money they are planning on for their Mexican compound?! LOL Que?

Beach update! After vacay they decide a much more $$$$$ place is needed to lay their soon-to-be retired heads. Pictures of a $2.5+ million dollar 10,000+ square feet oceanside compound!

Beach Update! Purchase has been put on hold until after election due to Obama ??

Have these people never heard of the TV channel called CNBC?

The weekly email get rich scheme from family members has died down quite a bit ever since Bernie (Madoff) went to prison.

I used to reply back to their emails asking them NOT to forward me that crap.

AI have a friend from morocco, that dude is always thinking of some new crazy scheme.

He shows up at my shop with dunkin donuts and i know its time for another business meeting :p

So many ideas i can't remember them all...some that stuck out were buy a cnc 3 axis mill, take it apart, figure out how it works then use it to build more, instant profit .
Then there was a craaaaaazy olive oil scheme involving olive farmers in southern nm, olive groves in morocco, bottling plants in spain or maybe morocco.. it was just one wierd over complex plan.

Of course he comes to ask me for either capitol or room in my business to work on his plans.

One day he'll come in with a idea worth listening too, i'm sure of it

Yep, I've been approached twice by friends. One was for Quickstar I think, the other was for some weird juice...

For the first guy, it literally ended our friendship. I was nice, went to lunch with him, listened to the spiel, and told him I wasn't interested. Haven't talked to him since (about 10 years now)

Second one was a girl my wife and I are friends with. Was adimate that this juice was going to be the biggest thing around. We listened to her thing, took the free bottle she gave us, and a week later told her it wasn't our thing. Lo and behold she gave up on it.

Wifes uncle/aunt breed some spaniel variety show dogs. They are doing ok with the dogs although its an all consuming activity taking up all of their time/resources. They decide it would be a great idea to diversify and get into alpacas for wool/yarn.

They buy said Alpacas, equipment to process wool, land to graze alpacas on. Time goes by, no time to process wool into yarn due to dealing with dogs and alpacas. Hrmm, how can we get out of this..

GOATS!! that's it, we'll buy goats to raise for milk and meat.. Everyone loves goat meat and milk, RIGHT?? Hrmm, we're broke though from the alpacas and dogs.. Lets borrow money from family members to buy the goats, BRILLIANT!!! Buy said goats, so now they're dealing with dogs, alpacas and goats.. Cept they now owe a metric ton of money to people they used to buy the goats, and extra land to graze the goats on.

Slaughter goats at a loss, alpaca wool rots, refuse to stop breeding dogs or sell pups at a discount. Dont sell property, because you're a fool to sell land. Might be worth something someday, right? So now they are up to their eyeballs in debt, owe tons of money to the man for taxes, as well as placing a burden on family members they borrowed money from for the goat foray..

Hrmm.. how to get out of this pickle.. Sell property, dogs, alpacas, and goats? Dont be foolish!! We'll invest our last .03 in bids on penny auctions which we'll sell for a tidy profit!! We'll be rich!!

I'm glad they live halfway across the country and no one in my immediate family was stupid enough to finance their stupidity..

I've sat through my share of Quixtar, Pre-Paid Legal, etc. presentations from friends, to humor them. Usually they end up calling a few weeks later, apologizing, once they fully figure out the MLM scam It's kind of frightening how easily people get brainwashed by these companies. I've seen plenty of rational, educated people get sucked into these things, only to get spit back out a few months later, minus a couple hundred bucks they paid out for "coaching seminars" and "starter kits"

Partners father attended a 7.5K "conference" in Thailand on how to invest in all these hidden investment options. Something like providing financing for oil rigs at 17% return blah blah blah. He came back with a box full of Jewish banker conspiracy books

Teller at the Bank I worked at straight out of high school was a fundy god botherer and tried to start selling Amway to customers of the Bank. He would also wait till staff members were walking back to their cars alone and accost them.

Partners sister sold herbalife for a while.

a buddy of mine lost about $5k on some online marketing thing that 'ran ads' or something. It was called 'surf' something or another.
You supposedly made 1% of your $ every time you ran it. So if you put in $100, you would make $1, and then you'd make 1% of $101 and so on. It would only take a few minutes so you could do it all day.

As you can imagine, my friend put in a few $100s, got a check for like $50, decided to go all in and 'invest' several grand bam! the website and everything about it flat out dissapeared one day.

Poof. completely gone with his money.

You haven't provide me with a business plan or a marketing strategy. I can see you have drive and enthusiams for this venture, but you really have to give me something to go on here. You're asking for $50 at a 10% stake in your company and I just can't see how you're getting to the valuation of $500 and I can't put up the money for that.

I'll tell you what I'm going to do; I'm going to offer you 50 at 75% just because I'm willing to put my name on the line. You can either take it or leave it but now is your only chance because otherwise, this shark is out.

Wife's cousins. Amway and Mary Kay.

Granted, they work great for some people, and can be good for making some extra money on the side - but I don't think it's going to be making you millions a month after you start. Especially when you use "I'm too busy growing my business" as an excuse to not get a real job.

My wife...didn't want to get a "real job" so she first tried to start her own cleaning business...worked OK for about 6 months but she hated it...didn't want to do anything around the house after cleaning all day..mind you, she only cleaned other people's houses two days a week. Felt it was demeaning and didn't like having to take orders from people (Um..ok, they are the customers aftter all)

Second, started selling "Avon" products...bought more stuff herself than she sold.

Third: started selling stuff on Etsy...actually did OK wth it. Made jewelry and painted...made some decent sales and sold stuff at craft fairs. Stopped because she and her partner would fight too much over the products there were making.

Finally...the best decision. She went back to school...she now has a real job that she loves...phew....get rich quick? No, but she is making money and doing something she likes (Dental Assistant)
