trunk lid idea need some help

ok so i was at my local car show today and i saw some Ford F100s that that hood slid to the front of the truck and then tipped up sort of like the old corvettes did. so this not being any sort of new idea at all to other cars but could it be done on a bugs trunk lid?

i can post some pictures i took of what some peoples set ups were to give an example. but wanted to know if anyone had done or seen something like this and how it was accomplished.

Yeah not new to bugs either. It was done a lot in the 80's and 90's.

I've also seen just the hoods done(usually fiberglass) on elaborate hinges based off of the front 1/4 panels @ the front apron & either simple pins or more elaborate hidden latches up @ the windshield end.

Either way it's a lot of work .

What you'd need to find or devise are hinges that tend to open upward 1st then rotate forward later in their travel to clear over the front bumper if you're running one,if not running a front bumper then maybe think a piano hinge http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy-a...w=1280&bih=806 ,but that'd have to be based off of just the curled in lip of the forward tip of the hood(weak/wobbly ) because if it's stepped back for more support then the tip of the hood is gonna rub on the front apron .

I'm not dissing the idea at all Hack ,just pointing out that there's just no simple way to pull this off given the geometry you have to deal with without welding in forward side supported hinge mounting points on about the weakest portion of the hood's structure,then having to devise a dual locking system toward the windshield end.


What you could do is create a standalone,hinge mounted inner frame to support the stock hood which is attached to it ,that way everything would look stock but function the way you wanted it to without showing all the structural support that'd have to be done to the hood directly(mount it to the functional frame via the stock hinge mounting points & handle spot).
Still gonna be elaborate & precise to pull off but just think of the gawks you'd get when you just push on the hood release button & it swings up toward you rather than back away from you supported by strategicly placed hood struts http://www.google.com/search?um=1&hl...HY_oiwKT4YDwAw .

thanks man i like tyhe hood strut idea because i wanted soemthing to hold it up incase wind were to to stsrt blowing it wouldnt come falling down in your head

When I was talking about a frame to support it I meant something not so elaborate as this

because you'd be supporting a heavier,more rigid metal hood rather than a weaker fiberglass hood,so I was thinkin' just a lighter angled aluminum

perimeter tucked inside the lips of the hood to accomodate both the hinge & latch mounting points .

thanks "buggyman" i do want to frame in the trunk lid so that it is not so flimsy. im thinking of some type of bracket like this but its still not set in stone.

what do you all think. should it fold out and lay in front of the bumper or in between the bumper and the front apron?

Got it Hack ,
Then the hinges shown would need a forward "kicker" feature like a garage door http://www.diygaragerepair.com/Holme...-p/kickass.htm hinge so it pops forward before upward when you either push on the exterior handle button from the outside or release the latches from inside the car.
(It'd be better to only have it initially release from [I]inside[/I] the car for security reasons so some d*mb*ss can't just pop the hood from the outside ) .

So.....I've pondered this same idea once or twice but havnt put much more than thought in it.....but.....there are a few cats that came stock with this type of hood opening....early BMW some random buicks and such....but pirating they're actual hinges might not be a hard thing to do......lmk how this works out!
