Looking to borrow a hub shark/hub tamer/B90/whatever your bearing removal and install press is named from someone in the Boston area. I am in the middle of doing front wheel bearings on a B5 A4, and I'm one of the lucky ones who can't get the job done with a slide hammer as other claim to be able to do.

If someone would be so kind as to let me borrow their kit so I can get the races out of the hub and press the new ones back in I would be most appreciative, and of course would remunerate you for helping me out.

You could try the Harbor Freight Tool in Braintree or Medford, see if they have this in stock:

They currently have a 20% off $100 purchase coupon..

Throw in some el cheapo item, and then you should be good to go. Those adapters should allow you do the job, and it would be pretty damn cheap, and worth keeping around.

    ^THIS

You WILL need a slide hammer to pull the hub, but that doesn't get the bearing out anyways. Did you make sure the bolt is out of the axle first?
Anyways if you can't get the hub out with a slide hammer yourself, find a buddy that is bigger and stronger and have him (or her!) get it out for you!

I know you want to do them on the car but if you get stuck......... You can bring me the spindles and I'll press the bearings for you. If the car is still mobile, you can bring me the whole car too.

If you find or buy a hubtamer kit, you will need a very strong 1/2 impact or 3/4 impact gun and a large compressor. Much quicker to do it on the car but it takes alot of force to move those bearings.

Gabe if you find yourself in my vicinity and need a beer you come looking because I owe you. I was skeptical, because the last Habor Freight tool I used was a ball joint press and even though I was only using hand tools I broke it in half trying to press out the ball joints in my Jeep. Now that we have stores locally I figured I had nothing to lose - if this thing broke I could just take it back. Worries were unfounded though. It was perfect. Thanks a ton.

Air tools? Nah. Took me all of 5 minutes to push out the stuck outer race and press in a new bearing and a new hub in with my breaker bar in one hand and my morning coffee in the other.

Thank you for the offer to help though, if this hadn't worked that would have been excellent.

To think - I was beating on that race for a LONG time yesterday with the slide hammer, to the point that the bearing removal attachments that Autozone bent without so much as a bit of movement on the part of the race and I was calling Marc's to see how much it would cost if I just gave up and dropped the car off there. It was just so darn easy with this cheapo tool from HF that I'm kicking myself for not thinking of that myself or posting sooner.

Glad to hear the HF tool did the trick. I have a few HF items that have paid for themselves tenfold. My engine hoist comes to mind..$140 and I've used it on dozens of projects. Sometimes it's trial and error on what stuff works AND lasts more than one use. I've had pretty good luck, the product reviews on the site seems pretty accurate and if it's a piece of crap people don't hold back.
