Does it have to be a 29er? I got my Giant Revel for $450 I think and it's been a lot of fun. Mine is a '12, but here are the '13s: http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/...l/11523/55890/

What do you guys think? It's the only bike that has everything I want in my price range. Also has good reviews.
21", SS, 29er, 36 spoke, double wall, etc.
Only thing I don't like is aluminum frame. Im a big guy and I'll be taking some moderately rough trails with it occasionally. Thoughts?

No I would prefer a 29er but it's not a requirement. It does need to be a single speed though.

have fun with a rigid fork on the moderately rough trails.
no quick releases, so make sure you carry wrenches on you to remove the wheel for the car, on the trails, etc.....
A Surly Karate Monkey has a Chromoly Steel frame, but it's out of your price range.

you might be able to find a redline monolog on sale in your price range. full price they are about $650

I don't think it's been asked or covered: why does it HAVE to be a SS? Don't feel like dealing with a geared drivetrain? really want to work on your strength/technique on the trails? just curious![]()

There is a practically brand new Civilian Luddite for sale near me for $550. Steel frame with carbon fork and pretty good component spec. He may be willing to ship. I think they are around $800 new.

N/m it is too small. But check out the Luddite. Lots of bike for the money if your budget allows for it.

That bike looks ok, the only thing I'd be thinking about switching away from quickly are the brakes, I've found that cheap mechanical discs suck giant donkey balls. Avid BB7s are the default choice for mechanical discs because everything else sucks. I wouldn't worry about the frame though. If it breaks, it breaks. Just buy a new one, they're pretty cheap.
Also, note: those wheels are going to be really heavy. And those tires are really heavy. That isn't really a terrible thing though if you're a big guy. Its better to have heavy and sturdy than light and flimsy when you're over about 180 pounds.

I would suggest this over the Nashbar bike. Cheaper with free shipping and some of the components are a tad bit better. Bolt on front hub like the Nashbar but that isn't a big deal IMO. Just throw a combo wrench in your camelbak (did that for years with my bolt on rear hub on my Monocog).

Bummer...didn't notice they stopped making those. There is always this: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/gravity/g29ss.htm
Pretty much the same as that Nashbar bike but $100 less and no shipping. Looks like they restock this month.
