Thread: Cam Follower @ 90,000 Miles

  1. 10-06-2012 03:10 PM #1
I bought a 2006 Passat with 78k miles earlier this year. It now has 90k and I finally checked the cam follower. Couldn't get a good picture of the cam, but it is definitely scratched. Does not appear to be gouged at all though. Was there an extended warrenty on this? It runs fine now with the new follower, but I was wondering if VW will cover this?

there is an extended warranty to i think 120k. I just had mine done yesterday. I have a 2006 FSI. They did intake camshaft, fuel pump, cam follower, PCV, ECU reflash. All of it was covered under warranty extension and was free. It depends on VIN though.

Holy cow, that's the worse I had seen so far. GL with VW on warranty replacement.

I agree; that follower is the worst one I've seen yet.

My cam follower failed at 92000km, dealer replaced the whole cylinder head.

What happens when it actually fails? Although my follower was destroyed, the car ran very well.

Many cars run well even though the cam follower bits are moving around in the head and other places they aren't supposed to be. Cam connector chain path is a nasty one.

Just got the car back after the dealer had the car for an entire week to do the extended warranty service. They replaced the camshaft, follower, hpfp, and even the fuel pump housing under warranty.

did you have an extended warranty, how did you get the dealer to pay for it?

I replaced the cf myself and then took it to the dealer, showed them the broken part, and told them it was idling rough before I replaced it (which it was). With the warranty extension till 120k on this issue they didn't question it. Took them a week and they gave me a new Jetta as a loaner.

You are very lucky they honored your warranty. Most dealers will not if you do the cam follower yourself.

were you the original owner of the car? Just curious because I just bought this car and my follower is bad and am hoping I can get VW to pay for it since there is less than 120,000 on the car.
