Forget the price difference, forget the performance difference.

Which style do you prefer the one on the left (981) or the one on the right (991)?

Porsche has two different design languages going for each of them.

Which of these do you prefer?

Spotted at my local dealership this blustery fall day.

With those shots, the 981. But closeup shots like that aren't really doing the 991 justice.

The 991 is best appreciated from afar?

981 over all, but I like the design of the 991 tail lights more.

I voted 991 because it honestly looks more like a Porsche to me - after having owned 2 987s and loving the cars and their style.

I guess the 911 is just a form I appreciate more in a single, cohesive shot. I think the new one's best angle is the rear 3/4, as demonstrated by these (slightly modified) examples:

Whereas the 981 can look a little ungainly from some angles. I think it has something to do with the bustle that holds the convertible top being slightly too high to really replicate the low, slinky look of the 550 Spyder. I'm sure the Cayman will fix all of my concerns though

I still think that this style looks better than either of those.

I always found that design to be inferior to the 993.

Agreed. But since we're going there, II'll take a 930...with the guts of a 993.

Between the two? 991 easily... sforsancho summed up my opinion perfectly.

The only thing I don't like about the 993 is the size of the front lights... The seemed disproportionately small in comparison to the rest of the car and it bugs me.

Having just been to the local Porsche dealer today, BOTH the 981 and 991 are beautiful cars, I too can't wait to see the Cayman.

Some lightly disguised spy shots from a few months ago. It gets officially unveiled end of November at the LA Autoshow.

I've seen the undisguised shot and it's perfect. Love it. Got my name 4th on the waiting list in Canada will have it in April.

a couple of weeks ago i was at my house in germany testing the new audi rs4 wagon. the dealer is also a friend and a porsche dealer. he had a relatively new ruf cayman on hand he bought off a customer who had broke both wrists a while and never really healed properly so he sold the car. it looked mean and was fun to drive but i like my 911's better.

I hope those are deeply disguised spy shots because that car doesn't seem to have the deep door and rear quarter vents like the Boxster, and to me that's the single best detail for the new version.

991 will look good 20-30 yrs from now. 981 will not.

This is my big fear with the 981 design, that it won't age as well as the 987 and 986. Some of the design cues that people like the most now are probably going to date it very quickly.

Those vents are still there, don't worry.

    Yessir

Not saying the 981 looks bad, but its distinguishing features are obviously based on current trends; not the timeless DNA we would expect from Stuttgart.

Agreed. Both new vehicles look fantastic. Personally I'm waiting for the Turbo/GT variants, I think the standard 991 looks a bit plain. The 981 has nice proportions for a roadster.

Ideally I would have the 981's front end on a 991 chassis.

Neither's grown on me yet - I still like their predecessors more. I'd happily spend the money for either of them on a 997TT.
A hundred dollars on your hair, fifty on your nails, fifty on make-up, two hundred dollars for an outfit. You ladies spend four hundred dollars to bring home a thug that ain't worth ten cents!

Go on any of the Porsche forums and talk to the guys who have had 911s and sold them and bought Boxsters/Caymans instead and like them more. Or guys that have had Boxsters/Caymans and bought 911s and sold them after a year because they weren't as much fun and gone back to Boxster/Caymans.

    Fact is they're all great.

And hey, if you like the design of the 911 the most that's totally cool, but it's just ignorant to think that anything else isn't a real Porsche.

I really like the 981 styling but it deviates too much from the traditional porsche lines IMO

when you put them side by side with cropped photos like that, the 991 obviously looks better.

the 981 is fuggin HAWT though.

Well, one day I will be getting one of these, probably in the exact same color combo and wheels if that answers your question.

The way I meant it is that people don't dream about owning just a Boxster. The 911T/ GTx is the ultimate Porsche so to speak. So until you can afford those, the Boxster/Cayman is the next best thing.

I have read many articles stating the Cayman handles better than the 911, and I know a guy who turbo-ed his Cayman, and does not want a 911.

That's just the 90's facelift of an older car and you can kinda tell. The 996 looks more coherent to me because it was all designed at once.

I really like the Boxster's integrated taillight-spoiler. Oddly, one of my favorite elements of the design. Kinda bummed the Cayman spy shot doesn't show it, or that the 911 doesn't use it.
