My speedometer doesn't work and I discovered that I have no speed sensor today. There is just a faux looking plug on the trans. I can't figure this out anywhere. Has anyone ever heard of this? My wire harness appears to lack the 3 pin plug for it too. I got the engine and everything from a 94 pAssat glx obd1. Thanks

Right in the center next to the shift cables. The black circle.

That black circle is the pulse generator of the sensor. the top part is missing. What car is this going into? Mk2's usually have a cable. depends on the cluster you have too. So we need more info.

So i got a new speed sensor. It works with the old Passat GLX cluster but it doesnt appear to work with the MK3 GTI VR cluster. I have not driven the car just rev it in gear on jack stands. Any reasons why the GTI one wouldnt work vs the passat B3 one?

edit and yea i found the plug. it was buried in a bunch of crap in the bay.

The cluster is probably broken, Mk3 clusters are known to kick out like that.

Try putting it into trip mode and see if the tripmeter advances by .1 miles. That's not a guarantee that the cluster is broekn, just another test.

Or you can go into MFA test mode and see if the speed sensor is sending any info to the cluster. Press and hold MFA while cycling the key on-off-on. Then spin the wheels (or start the car and drive) and set the MFA to the average speed reading. it should add +1 for every 1/4 wheel spin.

drive the car yesterday and it worked. not sure why i wasnt seeing anything on the jack stands. maybe i wasnt going fast enough anyways im all set and im pretty sure the previous owner removed the speed sensor to keep the car from putting miles on it. Frekin VR had 82K on the clock and the piston bore had no cross hatches, burned oil and had chips in the edges of the pistons. Oil smelled like gas too. Now I know why. Now 2200 dollars put into a rebuild of the motor i have a 2.9L but i have a trans that is about to go too. This damn motor prolly had 200K on it
