Thread: Am I missing any relays?

  1. 10-07-2012 12:56 AM #1
Never heard my ABS engage, ever. Also, only have 1 speed on my wipers. Here's what my relay panel looks like. Are any of these wrong or am I missing some? Car is 1995 GTI with ABS and airbags.

Your missing the 99 relay for your wipers. Let me search and i'll edit my post.

    Edited:

Wiper relay is second from the left on the bottom row.. heres a diagram:

...And you have a few of the wrong-amperage fuses in. Here's my panel, with the correct fuses:

Note I have a 197 relay in the wiper relay position, instead of the stock 99. The 197 is from a B4 Passat, and gives me the B4 Passat's variable-intermittent function.

Your wiper relay is in the wrong spot and upside-down. It should be in spot #8. Now your wipers will work. Leave your a/c relay spot blank, since obd1's don't need the relay for a/c. That looks to be it. You don't need the annoying door chime relay either.

#99 came on obd1's. It's the programmable intermittent wiper relay for mk3's, and is the same as a #197. Also the same as a #198.

#196 is the crappy fixed-time (6 seconds) wiper relay that came standard on obd2's.

Are you sure about that?? I'm almost positive my ac wont run unless I have that relay there.

awesome info. Anybody know which ones are for the ABS? Bentley is super vague on this part, and just says they're above the main relay panel, and doesn't say which ones or which control numbers!

My 95 2.0 never had it and it works. I searched about other obd1 2.0's and they never had it either. I think it's an obd2 thing.

Right click the fuse diagram I posted above and open to view image. Then click to magnify it. The abs stuff is in location 13, 14, 21, and 22.

The top left of your fuse box looks messed. Actually... all of your fuse box is messed up and rigged. Wrong fuses in wrong locations. Relays in wrong locations as well as missing some. You should probably just redo all of it to be on the safe side. Then figure out what does and doesnt work. Did you buy the car this way?

Yeah I bought it about a year ago for $1500. Just now getting around to figuring out some of its issues. I changed out all the wheel bearings, and rebuilt all the calipers and was bleeding the system and couldn't get a stiff pedal. When I hooked VAG-com up and tried to run the ABS pump, it wouldn't do it. I ended up hotwiring the pump to finish the bleed, but in the process I went to check out the relays to make sure everything was ok and found it like this.

You are missing your relay in position 22. I believe its a 78 relay and is for the abs.
Should be right above the 179 relay.

    Can anyone verify this?

    Edit:

You can almost make it out in this image..

Your relays should look similar to that.
Only difference would be the 72 relay you have in position 2. I believe this is from a jetta and does not have a rear wiper.

    Edited again:

Heres the information i found pertaining to abs and the fuse panel...

    ABS Hydraulic Pump Relay (78)
    ABS Relay (79)

    21. ABS Hydraulic Pump Fuse/ Power Window Circuit Breaker
    22. ABS Valves Fuse

Yeah that looks right. I'll try and track down a 78 relay. Also, it looks like the wiper relay has been stuck in the A/C relay spot.

Yes, but you dont need a relay in the ac spot.
