With the demise of the Crown Victoria it caused a lot of departments and sheriff's offices to look into a new vehicle. My local police department went to Chargers for a little while, but now they are going with the Tahoe. Along with SO and DPS (state troopers). A few of the other surrounding departments are all going to the Tahoe too.

Our local ambulance service just went to the Tahoe (already caught going 110 in it too by a deputy) for a command vehicle after their Vic took a dump en route to a call. One of our neighboring fire departments just picked up a Tahoe as well. Both with law enforcement packages. Wish we could get one for our station 2.

Is this the same in other areas, or are they buying something else?

Tahoes here too, I foresee many many rollovers in our future. CV never really had a chance but at least they would usually stay rubber side down.

Not many Tahoes but a lot of passenger cars (ie Crown Vics, Fusions, Altimas, Volts) and Escapes.

I've seen Tahoes as cruisers for the last 5 years and I have yet to hear of one flipping over.

In my area there seems to be a move to the Chevy Caprice/Police Cruiser/Majig. Haven't seen much adoption of the new Charger or Tore-ass.

      Mostly Chevy's and Dodge's around here. I've
Seen the new Ford Intercepter being tested by the MSP near Lansing.
They use Tahoes and Dodge's and old CV's now.

Is that Ford Interceptor a Taurus on steroids? I think they look pretty awesome and mean here in Portland!

State police have the new Chargers. City police have CVs, some Durangos, older model Chargers, and some other randoms. County sheriffs drive Impalas.

NEW Explorers are suddenly a hit and the Charger...saw one of the Chevy SS's? or whatever they call them.

      Here's a news story

      By Jack Brammer — jbrammer@herald-leader.com

FRANKFORT — The Kentucky State Police is rolling out new cruisers.

The agency is moving from the Ford Crown Victoria, which no longer is being manufactured, to the 2012 Chevrolet Caprice.

State police recently bought 125 of the vehicles — 100 in traditional gray and 25 in tan for its commercial vehicle enforcement division.

Trooper Michael Webb of the state police public affairs division said Wednesday that each cruiser cost $25,400, or about $3.17 million for 125.

They will replace the state police's aging fleet of 2004-2010 model Fords. About 1,000 cruisers are currently being used.

"Our current fleet is subject to a rigorous maintenance schedule designed to extend the working life of each vehicle as much as possible," Kentucky State Police Commissioner Rodney Brewer said in a release.

"However, law enforcement applications are extremely hard on vehicles," so additional cars will be replaced as current ones wear out beyond repair, and money is available.

The Caprice is a full-size, rear-wheel-drive sedan developed exclusively for the U.S. law enforcement market. It has a 355-horsepower V-8 engine.

Webb said that a research committee tested the cruisers and that they were cheaper than the new Ford alternative.

The aging cruisers will be sold at public auction, he said, noting that proceeds from the auction will be used to offset the cost of new cars.

      What are the E-Classes?

E220D or something lame or do they at least spring for a V6?

I'm assuming they're V6s because you normally see them at the Autobahn substations...

Rollovers would seem to be at about the same rate as civilian SUV drivers, although "Stabilitrak" is now standard on PPV Tahoes

Chicago has a pretty big fleet of Tahoes but since the Explorer/Taurus are built here the city has ordered something like 300 of them.

    25. 10-07-2012 07:33 PM #25
Keep in mind guys - this is not normally a department deciding on Vehicle X. It is often them calling up the representatives of each of the big three and seeing what surplus they have, and how cheap they can get them.

Every year in the BP we'd get a small allotment of new vehicles, from any of the major manufacturers. Just whatever was sitting around, cheap and painted white.

Locally I've seen Chargers on the highway, mostly still Vics downtown, a few of the FWD Impalas, and Tahoes. I have seen a couple of Challengers for highway patrol too. They look pretty slick, but seem pretty impractical.

Our lineup in the BP was pretty standard:

      -old Vics (great freakin' cars)
-new Chargers (NOT great freakin' cars)
      -older Tahoes (fantastic)
      -newer Tahoes (mediocre)
      -old Ford Excursion diesels (AWESOME)
-Ford E-type vans (absolutely fantastic UNLESS running aftermarket AWD)
      -old Chevy 2500's (fantastic)
      -new Chevy 2500's (mediocre)
      -old F-250's (crap)
      -new F-250's (mediocre)
      -old Rams (awful)
      -new Rams (also awful)

Same around me. Ft. Worth has a large mix but most are CV's. Burleson and Arlington are heavy into Chargers. I believe Burleson is considering swb Expeditions.

explorers seem to be the big hit. price wise when our town was looking earlier this year, the fords were a better option at the cheaper price. if I recall, the explorer was cheaper than the charger we priced out. we bought the explorer, and use it for truck enforcement mostly.

Las Vegas cops still use Crown Vics for the time being, though in Henderson (suburb of Vegas), the cops have gone to Tahoes.

The Nevada Highway Patrol uses Dodge Chargers and Crown Vics.

Our PD was one of the first to take delivery of the new Police Interceptor. They look pretty sharp, and as per the officer we spoke to - a great all around platform for patrol.

That's a good looking machine. It actually looks purposeful without all the chrome trimming and useless nonsense.

What's the rear suspension on that? Needless to say in the BP we did a lot of minor (sometimes major) off-roading in our cruisers even. That's why our Chargers SUCKED. The independent suspension etc. would get whacked out of alignment the second you hit some bumps. The crown vics would just keep going without needing to run to the shop.
