Thread: Oh great, Now i'm overheating!

So for the past few months i've had small amounts of leaking from the Lower expansion hose y plastic piece. I've just kept refilling it.
Today after driving around and leaving my car Idle i drive off and after a few seconds notice my temp gauge all the way to the right. I pull over as fast as possible and shut the car off and notice smoke coming out of the hood, open it up and what do you know... The same part split basically with coolant streaming out of it. now there was some brown residue coming out with it and immediately i thought great there goes my head gasket, but then i remembered the one time i had oil mix with the coolant and it looked like a chocolate shake, this had no foamyness or anything, so i remove the expansion tank and it looks dirty as well so i wash it and a bunch of what looks like sediment comes out. So i removed the lower expansion tank plastic y tube and it looks like one huge crack and a baby crack on it as well. I'm starting to think its my cooling system clogging with sediment. Anyone have any ideas? Would a crack on that Y joint spraying that much coolant cause an overheat?
I'm at a loss of next steps, But i was going to replace the Y joint and flush out the system, and then refill with G12...No idea if the previous owner used the cheap crap, but i also did the TB, Thermostat and waterpump 10,000 miles ago with a metal impeller WP.
    any ideas>

Also I forgot to list this is a 2000 audi tt 180q!

I just tried to move the drivers side fan. Is there supposed to be resistance when the car is off? Sounds kinda squeaky when I turn the fan by hand in one direction. And doesn't even move in the other.

It will still spin without the engine on and just in contact? Are the fans supposed to spin freely by hand?

Ok just turned the ac to LO. nothing spinning. The little fan didn't spin at all (felt stuck) and the big obe only spins clockwise am squeaks when I move it by hand.

I think the fans should spin VERY freely

If they are supposed to spin very freely then I know why they overheated! Guess I should flush and use a rust inhibiter?

Possibly but I believe the fans are fully electronic. I had mine replaced a while back and it was about $900 for the oem units to be installed.

It's a $35k car. How cheap do you want it to be? Seriously, though, look for used replacement options from a mkIV. You might get lucky if you can find someone who's handy with part numbers and ETKA.

Thanks for trying that out for me! Let me know. Hoping the only issue is a fan dieing. Although for the y coupler to break it must have been clogged maybe? Although if the fan wasn't working would that make the plastic y burst?

Both fans turn both directions with ease.
