So I have a 2001 Jetta 2.0 and when I first start the car, the engine makes a squealing/grinding sound, but it does not sound like a belt, and it only happens on a cold start, if i start the car after I have started it recently, it doesn't happen.... any ideas of what could be making that sound?

Probably your starter shaft not retracting whilst the metals are cold.
So, in essence, your starter is beginning to fail.

i have the same thing asked an instructor at my school told me its just the secondary air pump it supplies extra oxygen to the engine to cut down emissions during the warm up cycle and its nothing to worry about. my car has been doing it for years now no problems b/c of it.

Edit: i read you have a 2.0 mine is a 1.8t but could be the same issue.

you were right about the starter, they said it wasn't pulling away from the flywheel, and that if i waited too long, I would have to replace that too, because it was grinding.

its a pretty common thing. i hear you can take the started apart and just re grease it and it should stop. theres a DIY about it around here i think
