Mine made that sound in the back when I melted a hole through the fender liner. A loose piece of plastic was causing it. Might wanna check simple stuff like that.

2001 vw gti 1.8t, awd engine code, bilstein sport shocks & wetiec springs, suspension refresh (bushings, bearings, etc), 115k miles
the other day i started experiencing this weird clicking sound while driving. it almost sounds like when you were a kid and put a baseball card in between the spoke of your bike wheel. i started experiencing some faint clicking a few weeks ago but it was barely noticeable. now its gotten much worse and i'm pretty sure it has to do with the same thing.
i only hear the sound while i'm coasting either in gear or neutral. i do not hear it while my foot is on the gas, even with the slightest push. the faster the car moves the louder and more repetitive the clicking gets.
at first i thought it was a wheel bearing but i figured it wasn't that because wouldn't a wheel bearing click any time the car would be in motion (with foot on gas and with foot off)?
got under the car and inspected the axle/boots. nothing is torn and everything is in tact. i even cut out some loose plastic pieces that were hanging under the wheel well.
the car drives and shifts fine. gears go in smooth as butter.
also, it sounds like its coming from the driver's side.
im puzzled as to what this could actually be. any insight would be very helpful. thanks in advance.

did a little research and came across a thread of someone with an mk3 gti that had similar symptoms and it was a broken ring and pinion on the diff...
how likely is this on our cars? it does not seem very common. please just be an axle![]()
