Try white vinegar.
I hate that wicking shirts do that. The main reason I stopped wearing them. You smell like **** in no time. I have a friend who is "very outdoorsy" and constantly wears those kinds of shirts, and doesn't wash their smart wool socks after one use because "you don't need to".
They don't quite get that what is acceptable in regular society is quite different than the back country.

I wear shirts like this for a living(tennis pro). I sweat like a whore in church as well. The trick to keeping them from stinking is to make sure you rinse them out after you wear them. This helps them last a little longer although they still eventually stink. Also you can try the specific detergent made for that type of fabric

You may want to try soaking them in something like BioKleen BacOut, it's a natural enzyme cleaner (smells like lime). After that rinse very well, and then wash like usual. Another trick that sometimes works is to wash something by hand in a tiny bit of regular blue Dawn detergent. Rinse like crazy and then wash like normal. If you have a top loader machine, you may risk trying a tiny drop in your machine, otherwise, I'd recommend just doing it in the sink or bath tub.
(I cloth diaper my daughter and use both of those tricks to prevent diapers from getting stinky. The BioKleen works amazing and I use it every time I wash - and the Dawn is something that I do every couple of months.)

Wool has natural anti-funk properties. I can wear the same pair of smartwools for a week, as long as I shower daily and let the socks air out. I've got three pairs that I rotate and I wear them 5 days a week for work. Seriously, it works.
The "tech" shirts though, are another story. Some brands have started weaving silver fibers into the shirts to keep bacteria at bay. I still haven't found a solution to the issue though. I tried that special "sportwash" stuff, but it didn't do much for me. I'll try the handwash with dawn though.

+1 for vinegar
Try baking soda if that doesn't work.
Some hiker buddies like Oxiclean, but I haven't tried it yet. Leaving it outside in direct sunlight should work to some extent too, and is free.
Wool stinks too, although not as much and it's just a different kind of stink.

Tech shirts are a beach to get clean. Properly.
We upgraded ~ a year ago to one of those higher end washer/dryer w/ steam cycles, sanitize cycles, 2 hour whiter white cycles, etc. with some improvement.
Things I've noticed.
1. Detergent matters. Saving the Earth on load at a time doesn't matter if you stink. Even on a 2 hour cycle with steam cleaning some of those detergents don't clean.Use real detergent!
2. Don't leave your wet stuff in the washer...ever.This is where stink can begin IMO.
3. Make sure your washer is clean. Funk in there ='s funk on your tech stuff.
4. Don't be afraid to pour the liquid detergent right onto your problem areas. Let it sit for a few minutes. Obviously there is bleach (use small amounts) for whites & also the jug of color safe GERM REDUCING Hydrogen Peroxide?? clear liquid type that will get the funk outta your funny smelling towels & sweaty workout stuff. It works! No fancy washer needed.
5. At some point, you will just have to throw away the garment and get another one. It's just not worth it!

I think he is thinking of the same ****.
I personally have never had an issue with them smelling terrible either. But my sweat has never really been high ranking in the odor department.

It's not bad if you only wear it for an hour.

I am talking about the same shirts. I run from 1-26 miles in them. I don't wear cotton shirts unless I know I am not going to do any cardio. Sorry but if you wash your stuff each day they won't smell.
