i've had a built 1.8t (now 1.9t) sitting in my garage for a while after totaling my gti. i was going to get another gti and throw the engine in, but i found a deal on a 1.8tqm a4 i couldn't pass up. I'd love to put my engine into this car, but i'm not sure what is going to match up, if anything. i want to acquire as much information as possible before i just dive into this and start finding things out for myself. any information i can get is going to be valuable, assume i know nothing about this. i don't want to miss anything

a4 is longitudinal engine mount, gti is transverse

easiest way I can think to tackle it is this:
    1. Use A4 trans, should bolt right up,
    2. A4 mounts should bolt right up
    3. Use exhaust manifold from A4
    4. Downpipe from A4
    5. Intake manifold from either (if use the GTI, might require minor plumbing work, not sure)
    6. A4 wiring
    7. A4 ECU with flash, IMMO defeat

It'll get trickier if you want to keep more stuff from the gti (trans, ecu, etc, etc)

thanks for the reply! my biggest concern was the trans, and the wiring. i'm afraid i'm going to have to splice a lot of the plugs from the awp engine harness onto the audi harness.

if anyone has any information on engine/transmission mounts lining up, i'm still not sure about this. i'm having problems finding information on this type of swap, and i've been searching almost all night

One other issue.... the transverse and longitudinal turbos are different.

will that be an issue even though i have a custom turbo setup?

One thing you need to remember is this:

They are the same engine. Just turned 90 degrees, with a few tweaks to the top end. If you turn your AWP 90 degrees, the turbo and downpipe will be facing the passenger side wheel well, instead of going straight back down the tunnel.

You can keep the exhaust mani and turbo on your built motor, but you would need a modified downpipe to get the exhaust flowing the right way (assuming you use the A4 trans and mounts).

electricals won't be an issue as long as you use the A4 ecu and wiring. There shouldn't be any splicing needed since these are both early 1.8t motors. That means they are both narrow band and cable throttle.

I would use the A4 ECM and just have it flashed to deal with the built motor rather than using the GTI ECM, for a couple reasons:
    1. The A4 ECM will work with the A4 instrument cluster without issue. If you try to use the ECM from your GTI, it will not work with the A4 cluster without recoding.
    2. Also, the GTI ECM will not have provisions for quattro (if the A4 is a quattro car)

do you have any idea if anyone would sell a tune suitable for this engine+660cc injectors+ garrett m24L (.60 coldside and .63 hotside)? the ecm i have for the motor currently was custom done in house by APTuning . and thank you very much for the information you've provided so far.

I would suggest getting in touch with AP or unitronic or another tuner and talk to them about it. They'll be able to better tell you what capabilities they have.

There are a couple more things you will need to change to make this work:

-You need to change the coolant hardlines (replace the J plug with a new one, don't reuse the A4 one)
-You need the longitudinal intake mani because the throttle body will not fit in the bay with the GTI manifold
-A4 oil pan (need the snub mount bracket to bolt up)
-IIRC the coolant flange from the A4 needs to be used too

The best thing to do is rip your blck down to nothingand transfer over everything from the longitudinal engine. There are some pieces you canmake work from the transverse engine but the majorityof it is not worth the hassle if you have the right pieces right in front of you. A buddy of mine did it a while back, here is a link to his thread. It goes over all the differences and why. There is a good amount and like I said, not worth the hassle to use any transverse parts.
