Other than the fact that they are both sedans i dont see a resemblance.

This is the best selling car in Ukraine. Lada Samara!
And here's a link to best selling cars in Ukraine and every other country on earth: http://bestsellingcarsblog.com/2012/...-back-up-to-4/
2012 Lada Samara
1984 VW Jetta
Coincidence? Yes the 30 year old VW is obviously better looking than that pos, but hey at least Lada is trying!![]()

The 2009 refresh you posted is actually dead for 2012/13, I think? (the Chinese Jetta, not the Lada, which other than being boxy shares no resemblance to the VW).
I can see why you would think they're related... boxiness, wide C pillar, similar door handles. but other engineering details point that they are not the same- the rear door windows, the gas tank filler location, and the roof treatment.

No resemblance at all. And the 1984 Jetta you posted is actually a big bumper MK2 so must be at lease a 1990 MY car!

I wish I could buy a car like the FAW Jetta. Before anyone says it: ZOMG SAFETY STANDARDS!
Simple, repairable design, you know it drives well, and the B3 Passat dash makes for a nicely updated interior with good ergonomics.
I'd rather have something based on a similar era Japanese car, though, like an AE92 Toyota Tazz or a BF Mazda 323 Sting from South Africa.

Modern mk2 Jetta interior = 1993 Corrado dash w/ Euro under trays, mk3.5 cabriolets steering wheel & shift knob...
We've got plenty of that over in the Corrado forum![]()

That Samara has been produced since 1994, so not exactly a new model.
Back in the day, it was called LADA 21099 and was available with a beast of a 1.5L 65HP engine.

Yup, the one in the OP is at least a 90. I've got the first year for the US, with small bumpers
