Hey guys! I just picked up a pretty clean A4 1.8T Quattro. It's 5-spd and runs real good. Needs a little TCL in the interior and suspension but other than that, it's all straight. The turbo was replaced about a year ago and I am the 3rd owner of the vehicle. It was 15X,XXX miles and probably due for a timing belt swap soon. Original owner had it changed at 8X,XXX.

    Plans for the car:

    Maintenance
    Maintenance
    Maintenance
    Maintenance

    TIP/Filter
    Down pipe
    Exhaust
    Short Shifter
    Intercooler kit
    Tune
    Ko4

Later later I plan on an FT swap. May even come instead of the Ko4.

I took a ****ty night time picture at the gas station, so I will get some better pictures tomorrow.

Skip the K04 entirely and go with the FT. They cost almost the same, but the FT gives so much more bang for the buck.

Would a Ko3/Ko4 TIP, downpipe, hot side intercooler setup fit a Frankenturbo or BT setup with none to little modification?

I've researched a little bit. This is my first turbo VAG.

How much money are you willing to spend?

The KO4 will never be as much as a Frankenturbo. That you get more, yes. But you'll have to pay for it. In addition, you will need an FMIC to get the most out of it. Not to mention a tune, and it would be best if you get one specific for your set up.

So, what do you really want out of the car?

Remember, it has over 150K miles on it. If you put a big turbo, better redo the whole engine because you will blow the head gasket very soon if you don't.

    And this is for starters.

Not trying to rain on your parade, just being practical.

My plans will take time. Maintenance is number one. I just want a fun car that I can enjoy driving. Not looking for gobs of power because it is my daily. For what I am looking for, Ko4 might be perfect. Ideally, I want mid 200 awhp but I can live with anything more than stock

lolwut? I have yet to see someone make a post about blowing their headgasket when going with a BT or BAT. And the K04 and FT require pretty much the same supporting mods other than the tune because the FT flows more. The K04 is essentially worthless now that the FT is a solid turbo option. And OP, a K04 won't get even close to mid 200awhp on a quattro car. Even FWD cars won't make that much. You would need an FT at minimum and even then those are maxed out around 220-230awhp. A GTRS will get you closer to your power goals.

i agree with most of what you said except some of the numbers, the tts is making as much as you claim the ft is maxed out at on relatively low boost and conservative tuning with the stock k04 of course. i believe there are a few guys out there making around 300hp with the fts though they are usually running atleast intake cams. i believe high 200s is easy to do with a ft given you dont cheap out on supporting mods especially the tune.

The FT only makes about 280chp on the B5 1.8t. The most power I saw out of a B5 with an FT was 235awhp and it was running meth as well.

I just got rid if my k04 after 11k miles ran great but u should really go FT or big turbo. Ull crave more power as u go along I thought I would be happy at 230ish hp but got kinda old. It was deffently reliable.

FT FTW if you not looking to spend big cash on a build and 280 ish hp is not crazy fast but still fun! its a little more money then a K04 but a bit more power.

good luck with everything and welcome

Thank you guys. Since the turbo is relatively new, I'll probably just do full bolt-ons, tune, water/meth to hold me over till I can source a BT setup and new rods. UM is the only tune I am considering. Jeff is the man when it comes to customer service. I have no doubts about his abilities.

If going FT, Dave at Motoza is the go to guy for B5 FT tunes.

    FYI - Here's my dyno:

Relevent parts: F21 @ 20 PSI & 91 pump octane, 034 ME7 custom dyno tune, FT exhaust manifold, FT intake inlet, TT225 MAF, 2.0L block w/ 9.0 CR, AEB head w/ +1mm intake/exhaust valves, OEM camshafts, AEB intake manifold, Evolution Racewerks Competition FMIC, 034 3" HFC (ceramic coated), 034 3" turbo-back exhaust, APR air box, Bosch EV14 550CC injectors, 044 fuel pump

For what it's worth, I suspect that I may be able to achieve 250-ish AWHP with my setup on 91 octane and 034's dynomite dyno with high lift cams, better intake manifold, and slightly higher boost pressure. The 300 whp figures may be from the FWD guys who are running the F23. Straight from Doug @ FT, the F21 was meant to be an evolutionary upgrade from the old F4, but by no means was it intended for much more than 300 BHP. In short, the F21 feels like the turbo that the A4 should have came with from the factory, but it's not going to make you a track circuit hero lol.

Similar peak HP with the torque curve shifted/delayed to the right of the RPM plot.

My clutch lost pressure and wouldn't spring back into position. Pumped it and it started working again. Maybe an air bubble?

Is there a timeframe that it might occur once this starts happening? Or, is it just when it happens?

Thank you. I'm going to have to pray it lasts until next payday. Is there a problem with the stock line? What about aftermarket slave cylinders from vatozone or advance auto?
