Given two Canon cameras, both APS-C, same megapixels, one has Digic 4 and the other Digic 5.
Would you pay a significant premium to get the newer image processor chip?
Would it make a noticeable difference in image quality?

No. And I put it the way I did because otherwise the thread would instantly turn into telling me why both of the cameras I'm looking at suck, and I should get ______ instead. Oh, wait... it already did
Canon upgraded their image processor. It's one significant factor between two models I'm thinking about. If the answer is "meh... the difference is so small there's no way it merits spending a few hundred $ more" that means something different than "OMG it's so much better because X, definitely get the newer one". Just trying to see if anyone has real-world experience with both that I can learn from.

The image processor wouldn't be a deciding factor at all in buying a camera for me, nor for a lot of other people, which is why I expect you're getting some of these responses.
For me, I'm going to be looking at stuff like:
frame rate
AF system
ISO range
pixel count
etc, etc.
If the two cameras were more or less the same in all of the features and one had a newer processor, sure that might push me toward it, but I'm gonna be making the decision based on other features, and price.

Ding, ding, ding! This is exactly why you received weird responses. Since there are no camera upgrades that Canon currently offers that upgrade the censor alone, it's a pointless question. Instead, you have all sorts of upgrades to consider, not just the censor... and that's the way it should be. A censor is one small part of a camera and its features.
