Thread: Early 70's VAG Diagnostic Tool

  1. 10-11-2012 06:26 PM #1
My 1976 Golf LS has an early VAG Diagnostic port (see photos). Does anyone know what the tool/plug looks like?

The VW diag. machine looked like a big mainframe. My bus (1972) and other aircooled VW's also had similar ports in the engine bay. The Samba may have more info, but here's a pic I found of some of the parts of the machine:

    -Mike | BigSkyEuro
    2003 A4 1.8TQT Atlas Avant | REVO 2 | Podi P1 Stepper
1980 VW Lago Caddy 1.8 JH Hybrid swap

That port came on all VAG cars of the early to mid 70's (up to 76 or so from what I've seen)

As pictured they used a giant machine to diagnosis different things on the car through that port. This included timing advance, ignition dwell, battery voltage/charging system function and some other odds and ends.

A fun fact is that you can actually jumpstart old vw's through this port.. making them REALLY easy to steal for anyone in the know

Yea basically, 2 of the large female terminals in the box are positive (30) wires and when jumped from those to another (I forget how it's on the samba somewhere) it activates the ignition and will start an early carb'ed car.

I'd love to come across a complete functioning diagnostic unit, should one even exist.

Thanks for the responses. I love the Vortex geeks.

I will be keeping the port and will keep my eyes out for the scanner now.

I'm going to play around with it to work out which pin reads what and then I hope I can plug my multimeter in and read off useless information for the hell of it.
