There are couple of these TDI Cup edition Jetta coming to the AutoX events around Chicagoland. They actually do pretty good! That low end torque comes really handy in AutoX.

Here is what I thought of them when they first came out.
The kind of idiot that, when they were new, wanted a sporty diesel. Back then (before the MKVI Golfs) this was the only way to get a factory sport suspension, GTI/GLI brakes, and sport seats on a TDI.

It was essentially a GLI with a TDI motor, what's not to like?

I wish they would have at least come with a tune or something to set it apart engine-performance wise from the standard diesels. The suspension and everything that was upgraded was great, but increase rev limiter or raise the boost... something

At first I thought you were talking about the daddy's spoiled little brat racing series where they race cup TDIs.
#16
I think they're very neat cars--even if they aren't worlds different than a regular Jetta tdi.
#17
All I can add is there is a blue one that runs around my area and I think it looks great.
#18
If that's what you think of that series, I think you've got a misapprehension there. I know a couple of guys who drove in it, and they're anything but "spoiled little brats." They're extremely hard working, focused people who put in a LOT of effort to get where they are.

Were they trying to out-sticker the hybrids?

"You've seen it, you've heard it, and you're still asking questions?!?"
"Yeah, when do we go for a ride!?!?"

Get rid of the stripe and paint the blacked out parts body color. Then I'd like it.

This. I was in Austria back in '94 and my jaw hit the ground when I saw a Mk2 GTD. At the time, I didn't know they had even existed (this was before the intarwebs, for you young folks), but swore I would own one the minute they came out in the US. Fast forward 16 years, and the TDI Cup Edition was offered here in the US and I pulled the trigger. Honestly, I would still rather have a GTD (I am partial to hatchbacks), but I applaud VWOA for offering a one-off sporty diesel, which ironically, wasn't made available to any other market outside of the US.

I like it, including the bumper. I think it represents better in person than in pictures.
I attended one of the TDI cup races at Lime Rock years ago. It was a blast to watch although a little strange because the cup cars were so quiet compared to the other races. If they crashed all you could hear was impact noise.![]()

I would so buy one, especially with the prices of fuel going up.

It's a little flashy coming from the un-pimp generation, but hey, every manufacturer needs its TYPE-ARRRRR demographic.
You could build the equivalent pretty easily with take-offs, I'd imagine, and skip the flashy bits.

I really like the Thunder Bunny front end. And now with APR having an inexpensive tune for it, to 170 HP/297 TQ, I wish I had one. The only thing lacking is the GTI/R flat bottom steering wheel. They should have included that with the car. But it's a cool idea and kudos to VW for bringing it to market.
#33
Absolutely! As is, it has great power / torque off the line, but the torque does not translate as well after third gear and the acceleration rate drops noticeably. At the track, I found myself repeatedly looking at the speedo on the longer straights to make sure it was still picking up speed, which it inevitably was, just not with the same zest as it was at the lower speeds.
I'm not aware of a Jetta Sport TDI... are you asking about the MKIV Jetta TDI Wagon?
#34
I agree about the flat bottom steering wheel. The APR tune for the TDI is kind of a double edge sword. According to the APR guys I was talking to at the track event, the TDI tune yields a nice bump in power but may result in premature failure of the DPF, which can be a very costly repair.
