Fast forward 16 years, and the TDI Cup Edition was offered here in the US and I pulled the trigger. Honestly, I would still rather have a GTD (I am partial to hatchbacks), but I applaud VWOA for offering a one-off sporty diesel, which ironically, wasn't made available to any other market outside of the US.
What about that 2004 Jetta Sport TDI? Different?

I like it, including the bumper. I think it represents better in person than in pictures.

I attended one of the TDI cup races at Lime Rock years ago. It was a blast to watch although a little strange because the cup cars were so quiet compared to the other races. If they crashed all you could hear was impact noise.

I would so buy one, especially with the prices of fuel going up.

It's a little flashy coming from the un-pimp generation, but hey, every manufacturer needs its TYPE-ARRRRR demographic.

You could build the equivalent pretty easily with take-offs, I'd imagine, and skip the flashy bits.

I really like the Thunder Bunny front end. And now with APR having an inexpensive tune for it, to 170 HP/297 TQ, I wish I had one. The only thing lacking is the GTI/R flat bottom steering wheel. They should have included that with the car. But it's a cool idea and kudos to VW for bringing it to market.

Absolutely! As is, it has great power / torque off the line, but the torque does not translate as well after third gear and the acceleration rate drops noticeably. At the track, I found myself repeatedly looking at the speedo on the longer straights to make sure it was still picking up speed, which it inevitably was, just not with the same zest as it was at the lower speeds.

I'm not aware of a Jetta Sport TDI... are you asking about the MKIV Jetta TDI Wagon?

I agree about the flat bottom steering wheel. The APR tune for the TDI is kind of a double edge sword. According to the APR guys I was talking to at the track event, the TDI tune yields a nice bump in power but may result in premature failure of the DPF, which can be a very costly repair.

i drove the same TDI Cup that Tim drove & the underlined part is where i thought it fell flat on it's face...but i still loved it

of course it didn't help that i was trying to keep up with a German spec TT-RS and a Sport quattro

Ah... it's a Canadian-only model, eh? Very cool!

      Your quote reminds me of:

I'd love one without that terrible front bumper.
