Thread: Golf R insurance increase

  1. 10-12-2012 01:33 PM #1
I received my insurance renewal yesterday and noticed the collision/comp part of the bill for the Golf R increased causing the total cost to insure the car to increase almost 20%. No changes in driving history, coverage, etc to account for it.

A letter was included with the bill indicating that the insurance rating symbol for the vehicle (based on VIN) had changed and that accounted for the increase. I called the insurance company and they confirmed that the industry body which determines these "symbols" increased the rating for the Golf R (she said they typically re-evaluate symbols in Sept or Oct). Symbols are based on costs to repair, chance of theft, history of this type of vehicle being in accidents and so on.

So in theory, other insurance companies may also raise rates on Golf Rs. Just curious if anyone else has had a renewal come up recently and noticed an increase.

Mine went up quite a bit with Grange. I've since changed to Safeco, but it's still higher than my last car.

I have Progressive and the policy renews the begining of next month. Mine went down about $60.00 per year from my 2011 GTI that I traded in about 2 months ago on the R. It's $620.00 a year for 100/300 with $100 deductable on comp and $200.00 on collision.

Same deal here, mine went down from GTI as well. Thinking that they missed the "R" when I said "Golf R"...

I have all state and have 2 cars. My insurance just went down a couple months ago and I bought the car end of April. Before all state I was with State Farm and every year my rates would drop. Then they raised it and I shopped for new insurance. All state was much cheaper.

Our government-controlled insurance company in BC wanted me to pay about $1000 more per year for collision and replacement cost than what I was paying for my TDI. It was also based on how R was classified- they explained it as "a sports car". So I've been driving without collision insurance ever since I got my R.

Pretty sure they only use the VIN to identify the car.

Yup, when I was adding my car to the policy the lady kept telling me that the vin was wrong because it had a different letter in the vin then what she was use too. Then again English wasn't her first language. I repeated the vin 5 times for her. She finally figured it out when I said I'm standing outside in front of the car, should I take a pic and email it to you?

Be careful - if they can say you told them something incorrect, they might try to deny you coverage if you ever have anything happen. You should be ok if its their mistake.

I suspect insurance companies classified Golf Rs as regular Golfs initially and now recently have figured out that it is different, hence the increase in price. But it seems to me they went too far.

I need to call Progressive and ask them to up the value of my car by $10k. I'm willing to pay an adjusted premium, if it means things like my upgrades will be covered.
