Thread: Caliper retainer bolts

  1. 10-12-2012 05:49 PM #1
These are the 14mm Triple Square bolts that hold the caliper carrier to the wheel hub. Can anyone tell me if they are reverse thread on the right side? I just twisted off my 1/2" to 3/8" adapter in a brand new triple square bit trying to remove the POS. This is the only thing stopping me from replacing my rear brakes/rotors. I don't even know if I can get to the bottom bolt. This is easily the dumbest design I've ever seen as far as attaching a caliper carrier. It's as if they didn't want yo to have the ability to work on it.

Finally took a day to tackle this and got the rear brake pads and rotors replaced. It felt like I was nearly lifting the car off the jack stands trying to get the top passenger side caliper carrier bolt loose. I bought another triple square bit, this time 1/2" drive. I ended up having to use a hammer to beat on my breaker bar after letting the bolt soak with some PB Blaster penetrating lubricant before I was able to get it loose. That one was the worst.

I went with Blauparts slotted rotor and pad kit. After the anti-rust coating was worn off, the pedal feel and stopping power is much improved. I had 73K on the original rear pads, and the inner pad on each had barely 1.5mm left before it would have been metal on metal. These new U-Slot rotors and pads feel much better, but that's likely because my stock pads were so worn down. I had to beat the rotors off after taking the torx bolt out of them- rusted to the hub. I swiped the hub with anti-seize and then wiped it off with a shop towel so there is an extremely thin coat of anti-seize between the new rotors and hubs. The front pads, even at 73K, still have 2/3 of the pad left and no indication of rotor warping. Even so, I think I will replace rotors and pads next summer with Blauparts U-Slot kit for the front. I always thought the Passat's braking ability was a little lacking but there is a definite improvement with just the rears done- so I hope it will be even better once I replace the fronts.

I use my allen key and a rubber mallet. Just put the key in, and pound it with the mallet and it will loosen up.

No disrespect, but I'm not so sure that's a good idea. I think the triple square was ~$20. For that price I'd rather not take the chance of stripping that bolt and then being completely screwed...

Ah, I gotcha... What size hex key do those take? I'll probably do those next summer.

7mm I think. I'll confirm after work, but holy god it was hard to find. I ended up finding a set at Home Depot that had the right size. Every other set at half a dozen stores skipped the size.

Try to find a 17mm hex key once! I had to have that for the front axle on my motorcycle....
