So i have a 08 Rabbbit with 2.5 auto trans. I was replacing my stock springs with GTI springs. The installl went fairly smooth. One thing i bypassed was taking the hub off. I didnt want to fool with going that in depth. so when i went to put the strut back in on the passenger side. The axle had pulled out of the trans or popped loose. I had to spin it by hand as someone pushed in and finally it went back.

So i get the car together and go for a test drive and there is a very loud knock in trans or so it feels like pretty sure the driver didnt come out.

    Any thoughts sugggestions please.

Is there an intermediate shaft bearing on that axle? Is there a snap ring that hold the axle into the differential case?

CV joints, like plunge joints, have the capacity to move in and out along the axle's center line. If the inner joint is supposed to be locked in place with a snap ring and it's not, the knocking you heard is not a surprise.

If this axle has an intermediate shaft bearing and it's not torqued properly, the axle will rotate out of axis.

I fixed the problem. I pushed down on the hub to get the strut back in and When I did that it popped the joint loose at the transmission and the one of the bearings(image below) popped off the end of the axel It was a very easy fix. Thank you for the help.
