What I'm working with here is my mk3 cabrio, I've replaced the top once and have no leak issues but I want to take it a step further. I've seen the modular mk1 top and a few other failed attempts at hardtop but I think I've figured out the best and cheapest way to go about the removable hardtop.

Bought an old frame with torn top and glass from a friend. I started stripping it down to bare frame.

This joint will be welded solid

Another joint I will make permanent so I can get the form correct

All the moisture guard, headliner and various cables needed for up and down movement have been removed

      Bare frame

Next I will put a light weight mesh over the frame and start laying some fiberglass down and removing some of the excess weight that is in all of the hinges that won't be needed and the the old heavy thick mounting brackets.

at this point yes it is just a stripped frame but it will be taking some real shape in the next few days. i've found the mesh i will use as a "rebar" so to speak for the fiberglass and foam i will use for rigidity and shape. first things first though, i need to get a shell made up so i can figure out exactly where it will set on the car. I'm also trying to keep the original soft top so this could be an add on or a very good solution for winters, when most soft tops can get damaged from cold and snow. Should seal in heat and air conditioning a bit better than most soft tops since its not exactly a sealed cabin with the soft top.

Front mounting points will be the stock ones with same oem clamp mounts to front of top. Another notion came to me when setting this on my car. it could be a roof rack also with appropriate bars mounted (but thats another topic).

Best idea yet , watching this for sure !

Is it going to be quick release and when the top is off will you have some cover to cover the area where the mechanical parts were hidden ?
