Next generation Garmin navigation system features

New, Customized User Interface - Garmin introduces a new color configuration and design of its user interface that is customized to Chrysler and Dodge vehicles and provides a more refined look and feel.

Navigation for Uconnect brings the ease of use of Garmin into an original equipment, in-dash radio. The navigator includes highly detailed maps of the United States, Canada, and Mexico with more than eight million points of interest, as well as many cutting-edge features found in the newest Garmin devices. This includes spoken turn-by-turn directions, one-shot address entry via voice command, lane assistance, junction views, speed limit and current speed, a trip computer and mileage log as well as customized vehicle icons that looks like a Chrysler or Dodge vehicle. In addition to displaying the navigation interface and maps on thein-dash screen, the system also makes use of a second display, positioned behind the steering wheel, to easily let the driver see important information, such as next turn, at a glance.

3D Buildings, Landmarks and Terrain Realistic 3D views of buildings and key landmarks throughout major U.S. cities provide drivers better orientation. Using topographic map data, the new Garmin system also displays 3D terrain views of landscape elevations, helping drivers to see what lies ahead.

Trip Planner, myTrends™ and Multi-Route View A new Trip Planner feature allows users to easily plan trips with multiple stops, view routes in an overview screen and edit destinations at any time. myTrends automatically remembers frequent and favorite route destinations based on driving habits and predicts them at certain days and times without the user needing to enter an address. When starting a trip, the new Multi-Route View displays route options, such as fastest and shortest, in one convenient overview map, including time and distance for each, so users can pick their preferred route.

New Routing Features and Enhancements Garmin's new navigation system includes a couple of new features that improve routing. trafficTrends™ predicts traffic conditions and recommends routes using historical traffic data and recurring trends at any given time or day. Garmin's new point addressing technology enhances routing accuracy, for example, where several addresses of a housing complex are combined into a group of house numbers. The new system can now identify each individual house number and navigate there. Additionally, Garmin significantly improved the routing algorithms to provide even fasterroute calculations and destination searches.

Broader Junction View Coverage Garmin's exclusive junction view database now includes nearly 60,000 junction views in the U.S. and Canada, 25 times more than in previous versions. photoReal Junction View realistically displays road signs and junctions along the route with photographic detail to clearly mark the correct lane to be in for interchanges and exits.

      Powernet electrical architecture

The new Powernet system allows both high- and low-speed data networks to be equipped with as many as 40 individual modules, all designed to improve vehicle performance and enhance the comfort and safety of driver and passengers. Within the Powernet high-speed network, each module (e.g., electronic stability control) processes its individual data and transmits the appropriate commands within the vehicle to activate any additional systems (e.g. anti-lock brake system and cruise control). Uconnect leverages Powernet to deliver fast response time, and share critical information between the 8.4-inch touchscreen and the vehicle information center. The Powernet architecture also is the backbone that supports the Uconnect Access services and applications, including the vehicle health report and remote services.

Uconnect Access: A Powerful New Platform That Provides Multiple Ways to Connect

The Uconnect Media Centers R3 and R4 provide the 2014 Grand Cherokee with a built-in cellular connection so vehicle occupants are automatically connected to a variety of new services and the internet with WiFi hotspot capability. The new Uconnect Media Centers provide a direct connection to emergency services when the new 911 button found on the rearview mirror is pushed. Grand Cherokee customers also will automatically receive regular vehicle health reports and be able to remotely lock or unlock truck doors, start the vehicle, and flash lights from any distance via the web or a smartphone application.

Owners will be able to access select, certified in-vehicle applications. Driving-relevant applications will be introduced over time and are designed specifically for in-vehicle use. The certified applications are easily controlled with natural voice recognition or steering wheel controls to keep drivers focused on the road. The responsive 8.4-inch touchscreen includes the award-winning user interface designed by Chrysler Group Human Machine Interface engineers, featuring large icons and visual cues allowing consumers intuitive control of system features.

Uconnect Media Centers Are Always Current

Grand Cherokee owners will be confident to know their vehicle is designed to be forward-thinking, providing the freedom to upgrade to the latest features and services, without having to replace their factory installed Uconnect systems. Applications are updatable over the air and are downloaded directly to the Uconnect Media Center, so features remain current. Owners will be able to continually evolve their in-vehicle connectivity experience by downloading app updates or new applications as they become available directly to the Uconnect Media Center from inside the car, via the 8.4-inch touchscreen.

The new Uconnect Access system features best-in-class functionality, integrating new entertainment content and is the first time Jeep will offer HD Radio to its customers. Jeep customers also will have access to SiriusXM satellite radio, handsfree mobile phone operation, handsfree navigation, handsfree texting with compatible phones and handsfree control of music. Additionally, new connected services and applications provide real-time access to information and content that customers want and need while on the road. Uconnect is designed to provide drivers and passengers with relevant, focused and contextual information that is not distracting and easy to use, allowing drivers to remain focused on the road.

Also enhancing driver convenience, Uconnect features one-step voice command of navigation, the ability to check real-time fuel prices and listen and respond to text messages, combined with familiar knobs for climate and comfort controls.

A Variety of Ways to Control Your Content

Uconnect Access controls are placed on the steering wheel. Customer research has shown a preference towards audio controls located at the rear of the steering wheel. Audio system controls, including next station, radio preset and previous station or track, are located on the left. Volume up or down and change audio source are located on the right. This means drivers can keep their hands on the wheel while they enjoy a variety of entertainment content sources.

Media Console Offers a Variety of Options

Neatly integrated within the upper storage tier of the center console, a new multimedia input includes USB, SD card and auxiliary connections. The USB allows control of iPod or other media device through the large touchscreen displays and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. A more powerful 2.5 amp, USB port and 12-volt outlet also provide mobile recharging for electronic devices. In addition, MP3 and WMA audio files on a USB memory device may also be played and controlled via the Uconnect system.

Sprint Provides Wireless Platform for Next Generation Uconnect Access

Sprint is the strategic wireless partner for the next generation Uconnect Access system. The integrated wireless technology inside the Grand Cherokee enhances the driving experience by offering new connected services and applications. The services delivered through the partnership will be easy to learn, easy to use and will offer a seamless experience with the Jeep owner's digital life. An increasing number of features in the 2014 Grand Cherokee will rely on enhanced user interfaces including voice capabilities and commands to help limit driving distractions and keep the focus on the primary driving task.

      New 7-inch Vehicle Information Center

Filling the gauge cluster in front of the driver is an available 7-inch, color, premium vehicle information screen, featuring a new customizable function that enables customers to personalize information inside the instrument cluster. Similar to the premium Uconnect Systems, select 7-inch instrument cluster background screens are branded with a Jeep theme. Jeep's new information display is designed to visually communicate information, using graphics and text, quickly and easily.

The vehicle information display offers drivers a wide range of customization options, from a basic digital speed read out to specific vehicle status information. Operation of the display is clearly communicated to users with easy-to-understand icons and instructions. Using buttons on the steering wheel, drivers can customize the screen with as much or as little information as they desire. The system is intuitive and can be arranged for a variety of views. Up to three analog vehicle status gauges can be added to the display. The main screens found inside the instrument cluster menu are: digital speed, vehicle information and fuel economy, trip A information, trip B information, trailer-tow information, audio, stored messages and screen customization. Additionally, the four corners of the display can be customized to show information at a glance, including current fuel economy, outside temperature, time and compass direction.

I'm not sure the exterior is an improvement, but 8-speed/Diesel? Heck yes. More like this, please.

You may be right, but it is the same design as Audi.

      That's pretty.

Not sure about the copper-colored trim, though.

The exterior looks "cheaper" than before. I like the interior but it's more of a horizontal change from the current interior, not a step up.

The big news here is the change to the 8-speed ZF transmission, diesel engine option in the USDM, and the updated infotainment system, which replaces the absolutely archaic one in the current model.

As someone who plunked down big money on a 2012 Grand Cherokee Overland Summit just last year, I was really considering ordering a 2014 configured the same way albeit with the new diesel drivetrain. Now, I must wait to see how cohesive this refresh is in the flesh.

I hope ChryCo (FIAT) hasn't mistaken the 300's demographic for the Grand Cherokee, because I can assure you they're not synonymous; as a matter of fact, I think the Grand Cherokee is the only remaining American luxury car model primarily still bought by caucasians...

I like everything except for the grille-panel-wings that extend under the headlamps.
      I wish I had a cool car.

Progress for the sake of progress. At least it will accelerate the rate of depreciation for the previous gen, which I think is the most handsome SUV in a long time. I'd love to have a Summit...with a diesel, I admit...

Also - I was hoping the LED taillights would be plug and play with the '11-'13 models but I doesn't initially appear to be so.

The added lower brightwork on the Summit model makes the vehicle appear visually low to the ground and the bumpers way too visually "thick".

Not bad, but I was hoping this was going to be the Liberty. It needs a redesign way more than the Grand Cherokee did.

Too bad the "flipper glass" was eliminated, I really like that feature. Prefer the existing front end too.

The tech upgrades sound great though.

Over the last 2 years I've driven 3 different GC Laredos for >30k combined miles. It's a great truck, even in base Laredo AWD trim.

OP it'd be nice if you would've cited the original source for a lot of that information: JeepGarage.org, Milous, and WK2Jeeps.com
To say "ah, but the free market" is not so much to present a single theory as a solution to a problem, but instead to in essence present an infinite number of different theories and possible solutions, each competing against each other until the market decides which one(s) "it" likes and finds works best.

I like it. More diesels is more diesels. It will be interesting to spec out the cheapest diesel Grand Cherokee when it hits the configurator. I want one with vinyl seats and steelies.

Interior is lovely, drivetrains are an unexpected and very positive surprise in that 8ATs will be available for all engine options, gonna have to see a lot more official pics of various trim levels before I decide on those headlights and the front end refresh.

No GC trim level comes with steelies or vinyl.

xEleventy. I would never buy a JGC, but if I did, it would have to be a stripped base model.

Just came back from a ski weekend in Tahoe in my buddy's 13' Overland. It really is leagues ahead of previous editions in terms of interior quality. The addition of a diesel is a major

Like I told him, there's really no such thing. The Wrangler gets closer to what you're envisioning. The GC is priced and equipped like the luxury SUV that it is.

I will speculate that Laredo will have different (read cheaper) headlamps...that will probably look better than the ones we see one the higher spec models.

I've seen the new Grand Cherokee test mules running around here in SE Michigan for a couple months. All of them had diesel stickers over the fuel caps.

The 8 speed auto is going to drastically improve the performance of the lineup. Can't wait to see the performance numbers for the SRT!
